Learn the rituals of leadership ? Business Management Daily: Free ...

The road to executive leadership follows a strict path, says Carol Johnson, a member of the first generation of women on Wall Street.

?Men are very structured in how they do things,? she says.

Johnson tells of her surprise at how an executive could simply step into the role of chairman. In reality, she observes, he would have been able to take the time to organize one project and another over a decade.

After that, ?He knows the players. He knows the legislature. He knows the various people.

??He knows exactly at what point you knock the glass and say, ?All right. Let me say a few words.??

By contrast, she joined a board and soon was asking herself, ?How do these people know all these people?? In fact, it was ?bonding and training?instituted all along.?

Men who reach the top engage in rituals of initiation introducing up-and-comers to key players.

?I think we can use them as a model,? Johnson says. ?There are certain rules of behavior in the group which are so totally ingrained that you need the Rosetta stone. I see that women?s behavior is totally upsetting, startling to men?not because they are women, but because it is just that someone comes out and starts playing basketball in the middle of a football game.?

For instance, she describes a boardroom where some men sit at the ?top? of the room, others at the ?bottom.? Those at the bottom do not speak.

?One of the littler guys told me that he had been at the meetings now for three years and he thought that now he could start to speak up,? Johnson says. ?I was floored. This is someone who is CEO of a major bank, but he was waiting for his three years before he could start to participate.?

Are you going to make a character sheet? Or it isn't needed?

Same questions as above. I'm definitely interested, just let me know the layout of the application and I'll submit one as soon as it's up.

If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonesense. Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn't. And contrarywise, what it is it wouldn't be and what it wouldn't be it would. You see?

Pilot whales use synchronized swimming when they sense danger

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? An international team of scientists have observed the behavior of various groups of cetaceans in the Strait of Gibraltar and Cape Breton in Canada belonging to the Globicephala melas species, which are also known as long-finned pilot whales. These results show that these whales use synchronized swimming when they identify the presence of an external threat.

There are 300 pilot whales inhabiting the Straight of Gibraltar. Here these cetaceans remain throughout the entire year in the water of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. But, little is known about their social structure.

Headed by the University of Aberdeen (United Kingdom) in collaboration with the Do?ana Biological Station (CSIC) and Conservation, Information and Study on Cetaceans (CIRCE) group, the study analyzed the patterns of association between individuals within this whale community. The aim was to provide a long-term vision of their social system.

"The important point is that we compared two different populations: one inhabiting the Strait of Gibraltar which is exposed to predators (boats in this case) and another with an ecotype where there are not so many boats (Cape Breton in Canada). The pilot whales are social species and we were interested in seeing how mothers teach their young, for example. We observed that they use synchronized swimming when in danger," as explained Renaud de Stephanis, researcher of the Biological Station of Do?ana and coauthor of the study published in the journal behavioral Processes.

Between 1999 and 2006 the scientists gathered samples in an area of 23,004 km in the Strait of Gibraltar and took 4,887 images of the dorsal fins of whales to compare them with those in Canada.

"They swim in complete synchrony both in the Strait of Gibraltar and Canada. When sea traffic or whale watching vessels are nearby, the whole group collectively reacts to such external stimuli. When we arrived at the watching area they were swimming at their normal rhythm but after 10 or 15 minutes near to them, the mothers and their young began to swim in a synchronized manner in alert position. This is a sign of affiliation to the group," adds the expert.

According to the researcher, these cetaceans also have a social structure formed by permanent partnerships. This means that they spend their life with the same whales and they do not interchange between different groups, as in the case of bottlenose dolphins.

Thanks to the study we now know that the presence of vessels also disturbs diving behavior. "As such, when we began observing the whales up close, they tended to spend quite some time on the surface. However, the longer we spent nearby, the longer they stayed under water. This behavioral change could affect their energy levels, since they then have to make more of an effort to protect themselves and their young. In turn this limits hunting time, which means that they cannot feed their young properly," concludes the researcher.

How are you tracking the Foreclosures in the Santa Clarita Cities ...

With several ways of doing this ?tracking?, one of the things that I would like you to heed is the following warning, ?If you are searching for foreclosures and bank owned inventory ? make sure you are using a local Real Estate agent?s website and resources??

Searching with Local SCV Foreclosure Services:

Giving up your mobile phone number:

Santa Clarita foreclosuresThis could mean the difference between you keeping a cellular number and email address you love or having to change them for another. ?Why? ?Because when you are searching for things like homes, foreclosures, bank owned and auctions, the real estate?syndication?websites know those are ?big trigger? items and people are searching for them hand over fist with millions of inquires a week.

I hate being scammed?

Because they have been built with the ?monetizing of your personal?information? in mind, they work very hard at getting you to give it up. ?While that does not seem like a big deal for some, ask around within your sphere if anyone has ever given away their personal?information?on -line, even innocently, to find out their doing so caused them to be teleported into a SPAM abyss.

How to find a Local Realtor Resource:

It could have been when you were looking for ?cheap homes? or ?best moving companies?. ?Look at the address on the page, is it local? What about the real estate the page is displaying? ?Is if within where you want to buy. ?And I?m not talking about if they have a map of the whole United States ? it should be a bit more localized than that :)

One of the things we love, as Local Santa Clarita real estate agents, is for people to subscribe to become part of our conversation. This is easy and will give you the BEST Santa Clarita housing news has to offer. ?It comes twice a month, no more, no less. ?It?s free and it?s put together by REMAX of Santa Clarita?s Paris911 Team. ?Click here to subscribe to SCV Realtor News and thanks ahead of time for doing so!

95% Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

All Critics (58) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (55) | Rotten (3)

Her life, and her work, transcended what we think of as "fashion." Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel celebrates a unique and uniquely determined woman.

Many people remember some of Diana Vreeland's famous pronouncements ("I adore pink! It is the navy blue of India!") but few remember actually hearing her speak. The documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel takes care of that.

For fashionphiles and pop culture vultures, there's much to devour.

Diana Vreeland is both history lesson and sentimental love letter to a fashion titan.

Legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland was the consummate dreamer, a romantic who never looked back and propelled society forward.

A feast for fashion-history buffs and anyone who applauds unstoppable eccentricity.

...more of an energetic and affectionate sketch than a revealing portrait of this oversized personality, but one has to wonder if the woman who celebrated glittering surfaces would have wanted it any other way.

This fascinating documentary reveals that Vreeland (who died in 1989, aged 86) was an original: a dynamic woman with energy to spare and an infectious lust for life

What makes this such a joy to watch is not just the timeline of fashion highlights, but Vreeland's unique perspective on life.

The filmmakers have done a fine job corralling so many fantastic tales from Vreeland's life.

"Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel" is an intriguing portrait of a true original; you only wish the movie had half the color and verve of its subject.

A lively movie, and in the case of its appearance-obsessed subject, it feels right that all it does is skim the surface.

[Vreeland's] influence on twentieth-century culture was large, and it's celebrated here with affection, dedication and skill--but very little critical detachment.

Though unwilling to dig too deeply into what seems an imperfect private life, it still serves as a splendid introduction to a unique personality.

A poignant portrait of an inveterate iconoclast who couldn't help but push the envelope.

[A] warm portrait of the world's first true fashion maven.

It can be hard to keep up at points -- not with the plot, but with the amount of inspiration that Diana can still strew over an audience.

How does immune globulin therapy work? Now is the time to find out

Immune globulin replacement began decades ago as a treatment for patients who could not make their own protective antibodies, but has proven to have much broader benefits than originally expected. With new uses regularly being discovered for this limited and expensive resource, including as a potential treatment for Alzheimer's disease, now is the time to discover exactly how intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) treatments work, and to engineer a protein that can provide similar benefits, writes Erwin Gelfand, MD, chair of pediatrics at National Jewish Health in the November 22, 2012, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

"It has been a challenge to understand exactly how IVIG provides its antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory benefits," said Dr. Gelfand. "We need to figure it out so we can bring this treatment to more people who have no other options for treating their conditions."

Dr. Gelfand is an internationally recognized expert on immune deficiencies. In the late 1960s he was among the first to successfully perform a bone-marrow transplant for severe combined immune deficiency. He has used IVIG for decades to treat patients with inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

Intravenous immune globulin solutions are prepared from the pooled plasma of thousands of healthy blood donors. Thus, it carries a tremendous diversity of antibodies, which can help defend against a wide variety of pathogens. It was originally introduced in the 1950s as a treatment to replace the missing disease-fighting antibodies in patients whose immune deficiencies left them vulnerable to infections.

Fairly quickly, however, it became apparent that its benefits extended beyond simple antibody replacement. In a patient with an autoimmune blood disease, it successfully restored blood platelet numbers, cells that help clot blood. Since then dozens of immune and inflammatory diseases have been shown to benefit from IVIG treatment, including Kawasaki's disease, kidney transplant, Guillain-Barr syndrome, myasthenia gravis, graft-versus-host disease and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Dr. Gelfand and others believe that there are probably several mechanisms responsible for the benefits of IVIG. While antibodies have a primary binding site that they use to detect and clear hazardous proteins, they also have several other binding sites that interact with cells and soluble proteins that influence inflammatory and immune processes. IVIG also contains soluble proteins, including cytokines and chemokines, that could contribute to its beneficial effects.

While some progress has been made in understanding the beneficial mechanisms of IVIG, no definitive proteins have been discovered that could serve as substitute treatments.

"With a growing list of diseases that respond to IVIG treatments and its potential use for Alzheimer's disease, demand for IVIG will soon outstrip our ability to collect and provide it to patients in need," said Dr. Gelfand. "Now is the time to accelerate and focus our efforts on understanding IVIG's extraordinary actions."

Nexters News: Future Communities ? Deliver lasting Social Change ...

Change is in the air. The ?age of austerity? has brought public service cuts but also a new wave of energy determined to solve society?s problems in new ways.

In the general public this was exemplified by The London Olympics and the 70,000 volunteers involved. These Game Changers showed a spirit of ?mucking in? and a want to be involved in something greater than individual gain. Beyond the Games, the career choices of graduates are changing too: with 51% naming the ability to make a difference as a key factor in their job choice compared to just 4% in 2011.[1]

This energy is not just affecting individuals but is occurring in each sector. For all the focus on traditional investment banking in London, the city is also leading the world on Social Investment -? Social impact Bonds and other devices are being developed to incorporate social as well as financial return to investment portfolios while public spending now has now set social requirements through the Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012.[2] In the past years, Social Enterprise in Britain have seen incredible growth in number and effectiveness ? last year saw the top 100 fastest growing enterprises growing on average by 91%.[3] Moreover new funds and grants programme, from the likes of the Lottery and Nesta, appear each month to accelerate this growth. In a world still reeling from economic shock, each sector is mobilising to meet the challenges being faced.

This new wave does not come from nowhere. Pro-social activity has been woven into the fabric of our communities for years ? from religious and PTA groups activities through to local business employing those in need. The key exponent of this is this country long established voluntary sector: from its victorian roots, to the 1919 National Council of Social Service supporting and advising voluntary workers, and on to voluntary sector coordination with Whitehall in the 1960s Wilson administration.[4] Today?s CVSs have often been supporting the community for over 30 years. By working with these organisations, utilising their networks and experience, this new energy can be channeled and make real lasting difference.

Tying all these together is the promise and potential of online technology. Widespread adoption, especially amongst traditionally more hard to reach groups, mean that online solutions not only provide a cost efficient channel but the means of reaching those previously isolated. By using the latest innovations in web development in accompaniment to the experience and networks of CVS, authorities and other organisations, informed and effective pro social activity can take place on a scale never seen before.

This is not a far off future, it is happening today. Ealing Involved marks one of the first of many steps in the empowerment of society to work at a grassroots level to identify and tackle social problems in a coordinated, efficient manner.

Our work at Stickyboard is based around this aim. Whilst developing and iterating our platforms, we are seeking local partners bring similar platforms to every village, town and city in the UK. In doing so the new tools the web provides can be used to channel new energy towards social good, coordinating with efforts across sectors whilst building upon existing establish community focused organisations. Together we can build a stronger community and deliver lasting social change for all.

Poland says university scientist planned to blow up parliament

WARSAW (Reuters) - Polish officials said on Tuesday they had arrested a radical nationalist who planned to detonate a vehicle loaded with four metric tons of explosives outside parliament, possibly when the president and prime minister were in the building.

The suspected plot was the first of its kind to be exposed since Poland threw off Communist rule more than 20 years ago. It is likely to put intense scrutiny on radical right-wing groups in Poland which are fiercely opposed to the liberal government.

Polish television, citing sources close to the investigation, said the suspect planned to copy methods used by Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in bomb and gun attacks in Norway last year and said he was driven by far-right views.

"The case looks very serious," Pawel Gras, a government spokesman, told a local radio station. "We know that the possible targets were to be the president, the parliament and the government."

Prosecutors said the man, a scientist who works for a university in the southern city of Krakow, had assembled a small arsenal of explosive material, guns and remote-controlled detonators and was trying to recruit others to help him.

A video recording taken from the suspect showed what prosecutors said was a test explosion he conducted, sending up a huge cloud of dust and leaving a large crater in the ground.

"The suspect does not belong to a political group or party. He claims that he was acting on nationalistic, anti-Semitic and xenophobic motives," prosecutor Mariusz Krason told a news conference.

"He carried out reconnaissance in the neighborhood of the Sejm (parliament). This building was to be the target of the attack. He collected explosives and materials for detonation," Krason said.

SOPHISTICATED PLOT

Polish society is deeply polarized between liberals and those who believe the country is neglecting its Catholic roots and succumbing to foreign influence.

Most right-wing groups renounce violence, but some on the margins are more radical. A rally in the capital, Warsaw, this month by right-wing nationalists turned violent, when youths in the crowd started throwing flares and stones at police.

Prosecutors produced evidence suggesting the unidentified suspect was planning a sophisticated attack.

They showed reporters photographs of pistols and bags of ammunition which they said he had bought in Poland and in Belgium. They also showed several vehicle license plates, both Polish and foreign, which they said had been found among his belongings.

They said the suspect had used his scientific background to assemble the explosives himself. "He is a specialist in the field," prosecutor Krason said.

Officials said that they had found explosive substances including hexogen and tetryl, as well as detonators that could be triggered remotely using a mobile telephone.

The dean of the Agricultural University in Krakow, where prosecutors said the arrested man worked, said the man had never given any reason for suspicion.

"It never occurred to us that at our school there could be a person involved in such matters. There were no indications from his co-workers that anything unusual was happening," Roman Sady said.
