Review: Don't fear 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark' (AP)

Size shouldn't matter when it comes to scary creatures. After all, plenty of people are terrified of rats and spiders.

Yet savage and ugly as the tiny monsters are in "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," they're not as frightening as the filmmakers would have you believe. These wee beasties are not all that interesting, either, and frankly, neither is the movie.

Producer and co-writer Guillermo del Toro and director Troy Nixey manage a lot of creepy atmosphere in their story of a couple (Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes) and a young girl menaced by nasty little things that swarm up from beneath the mansion they're restoring.

With the girl at the heart of the tale and del Toro's name the big selling point, the filmmakers want you thinking of the movie as a cousin to his masterful "Pan's Labyrinth," another story of a girl caught up in a world of fantastical terror.

"Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" is an awfully tame cousin, though, the creatures uninvolving and their antics more irritating than petrifying.

Based on a 1973 television movie that starred Kim Darby and Jim Hutton, del Toro and co-writer Matthew Robbins' update has architect Alex Hurst (Pearce) and girlfriend and collaborator Kim (Holmes) in the home stretch of their restoration of Blackwood Manor.

A promising prologue lays out terrible doings that beset the manor's old master, who discovered that small, ravenous creatures with an appetite for children's teeth were living below his home.

What perfect timing that the arrival of Alex's moody daughter, Sally (Bailee Madison), leads to the discovery of a secret basement sealed decades ago to imprison the creatures, known as the homunculi. Now the monsters have just what they want: freedom to roam the house through the air ducts and a child with a mouth full of tasty calcium.

Speaking in whispery voices, the homunculi are obnoxious taunters more than predators for much of the movie, causing "Gremlins"-style havoc, only without the gags. Naturally, Alex and Kim don't believe Sally's wild tales of monsters stalking her, assuming instead that the girl is just acting out over the neglectful mom who packed her off to Blackwood Manor, her inattentive dad and his interloper girlfriend.

The thinly developed characters move in narrow emotional ranges. Humans wander around with perpetually furrowed brows, homunculi scoot about like the hissy, conniving little creeps they are.

The tension del Toro and Nixey create promises much more than it delivers. When the homunculi finally step up the action, their confrontations with the humans seem more silly than scary.

That's partly because of the unsatisfying mythology the filmmakers offer to explain the creatures. We're told how vile and black-hearted the homunculi are, yet what we get on screen is a brood of pests somewhat more adept at house-wrecking than rodents.

These are petty, stunted monsters that certainly are worth being afraid of if you were locked in with them in a dark basement. Watching them in a dark theater, though, there isn't that much to fear.

"Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," a FilmDistrict release, is rated R for violence and terror. Running time: 100 minutes. Two stars out of four.

Promote Your Business With These Internet Marketing Tricks ...

Effective Internet marketing tactics can be a great way to build any online business and boost profits. The rate at which your business grows is dependent on the marketing strategies you choose. The key to this lies in knowing what the market you?re trying to target wants. When you combine these elements you should see an increase in the number of targeted visitors coming to your site that results in an increase in profits. Creating long term success with any online business can mean implementing several Internet marketing elements together to give you the results you want. In this article we will be discussing a few Internet marketing tips that can boost your online presence. Many companies comprehend the importance of using internet marketing including companies managed by Vab Goel. Vab Goel is the Chief Executive Officer of Virtela, the class leading global network solutions company. Vab Goel founded Virtela in April 2000 and also is a general partner with NVP.

If you want to succeed as an internet marketer, remember that you have to learn to see your product through your customer?s eyes. As you create your products, keep your customers and their needs foremost in your mind. Your customers have to be the main focus. Next, target your promotions towards a specific group.

It?s not practical to try to promote something to the whole world. You don?t have to satisfy everyone, only your target audience. You will do better if you can gain a good reputation in your own niche. This way, people will start to look to you for answers in your area of expertise. Your reputation as a trusted authority will grow. Internet marketing is actually one of the most successful ways to drive quality targeted traffic to your company and is employed by large companies like Virtela which is lead by Vab Goel. Vab Goel has worked for as well as fostered strategic relationships with many different hi-tech businesses such as Qwest, Qtera, Corvis and Sonus Networks. Vab Goel focuses his efforts on systems, services as well as Internet investments. One very powerful way to promote your products and services is through videos, if you learn how to do this the right way. Video marketing is still in its early stages of development, so you can get ahead of many others who aren?t yet doing it. Your videos should be well designed and provide viewers with real value. But that doesn?t mean they have to be boring. You have to figure out how to present your content in a way that?s informative yet also enjoyable. Video marketing, like other types of marketing, should be tracked, so that you know how many views and click throughs your different videos get. Again, this is a marketing technique that is still under-utilized, which leaves a lot of room for marketers who are willing to experiment.

You also need to be sure of your website?s main purpose in order to get optimum results from your marketing efforts. Analyze your website?s main goal and know what you want it to accomplish. The clearer you are about this aspect, the easier you?ll find it to deliver a message that will appeal to your visitors. Your website is your online salesperson, so if you don?t know what it?s supposed to be telling your visitors to increase conversions, you could find your conversions suffering. Apart from that, you should also have marketing goals in place so that you are sure about your progress. In essence, Internet marketing is an ongoing process, where you piece together several marketing elements to achieve the same end result. You can?t just do it once and expect to see long term results. You will have to constantly analyze, strategize and apply new techniques to see higher profits. Choose great products and the focus on presenting them to your target audience so they can clearly see the benefits for them in your message. At first you might feel as though results are slow, but as you implement more techniques on a consistent basis, you?ll soon see your results picking up pace. Keep in mind that your primary aim as a successful Internet marketer is to find a way to promote only good quality products that will benefit your customers.

Jersey Shore Fist-Pumps Way to Ratings Win

Inconceivable as it would have seemed a few years ago, MTV continues to dominate Thursday nights in the ratings. The reason is simple: Jersey Shore.

The reality show continues to lead all programming on that night among viewers 12-34. It has done so in each of its three weeks on the air this month.

A total of 7.8 million total viewers – up 5 percent from last week - tuned in to watch Deena get bi-curious and Snooki get pissed at The Situation.

Jersey Shore: The Last Supper

AWW YEAH! The Last Supper reenacted here will be far from the last you see of the Jersey Shore stars. The rate they're going, they gett bigger each week.

The episode ranked as one of the 10 most-watched telecasts in MTV’s history (trailing six Jersey Shore Season 3 episodes and the Season 4 premiere).

Things should only pick up in the coming weeks as tension between Snook, Ron and Sitch heats up and blows are exchanged. It's gonna be ugly/sweet.

Plus Snook rear-ends a cop.

The Cushion Cut Diamond Ring has been around since the latter part of the eighteen hundreds and the early nineteen hundreds but to this day remains one of the most popular rings to propose with. This dazzling shape is a pleasant alternative to some of the better known cuts such as Brilliant Cut Diamonds, Princess Cuts, and the oval and emeralds. The reason being is because this cut essentially incorporates some similarities from all of these shapes.

It goes without saying that choosing a diamond that has a rectangular or block structure means that you will be distinctively different from the vast majority of precious jewelry buffs. That said, there is one thing that can?t be pushed aside; ladies adore the contour of the Cushion Cut Diamond Ring and that?s the reason why this eye catching diamond has continued to be the apple of the eye of an untold number of women throughout the years.

Before you can truly appreciate a cushion cut engagement ring, you need to understand what these adored gemstones are all about. This is a distinctive kind of ring with regards to the gemstone and how it is cut. When you hear the term, ?cushion?, that is actually referring to the fact that this gem looks like a pillow.

Here are several other matters to observe concerning the Cushion Cut Engagement Ring. The transparency of the diamond with this type of diamond cut is unequalled. Which implies; you must make use of the maximum grade gemstones for Cushion Cuts. Also, these kinds of diamonds were developed especially for romantic candlelight dinners. Hence, the glimmer beaming from a Cushion Cut Diamond Ring is unmistakable.

This sort of engagement ring is regarded as a classic style. It has a really romantic and antiquish look with an elegant feminine setting. Ideally, with Cushion Cut Engagement Rings, the particular gemstone should be the heavier carat weight in order to have that stylish look.

Cushion Cuts are amazing to behold and just so you understand, they tend to be pricey ? even so, they are a terrific investment decision. The further exceptional the jewel, with regards to the carat weight, the more expensive it will probably be. Of course, should you add color, for instance a Pink Diamond, or a Brown Diamond, the investment might be bank account pulsating to some prospective buyers; however, appropriately worth the your cash outlay.

Cushion Cut Diamond Rings are still quite rare, even in today?s modern jewelry stores. At least 10 die, 1,800 displaced in Nigeria floods (AP)

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria ? Nigerian emergency authorities say at least 10 people have died in building collapses caused by heavy rains in the country's north.

A regional coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency said Monday that the victims include a mother and her three-year-old child. Their house caved in during Sunday's six-hour-long rains in Kari, a town that sits along a stream in Bauchi state.

Aliyu Sambo said Kari Primary School had been converted into a camp to provide relief to about 1,800 people who had been displaced by the floods. He said about 150 mud houses and hundreds of livestock were washed away.

A fire service official also said Monday another house collapse in Kano killed six people. That brings the known death toll to 10.

Nigeria's rainy season lasts roughly from June to September.

Beams to order from table-top accelerators

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2011) ? Laser plasma accelerators offer the potential to create powerful electron beams within a fraction of the space required by conventional accelerators -- and at a fraction of the cost. Their promise for the future includes not only compact high-energy colliders for fundamental physics but diminutive sources of intensely bright beams of light, spanning the spectrum from microwaves to gamma rays -- a new kind of ultrafast light source for investigating new materials, biological structures, and green chemistry.

Compared to today's giant science facilities, "table-top" laser plasma accelerators may eventually be able to do equally powerful research with minimal environmental impact.

To reach these goals, laser plasma accelerators must be able to produce high-quality, stable electron beams and tune those beams to the users' needs. The LOASIS program at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has already demonstrated high-quality beams up to a billion electron volts in a mere 3.3 centimeters; the BELLA project will reach 10 billion electron volts in a single meter.

Now the LOASIS team has demonstrated a simple way to tune highly stable beams through a wide range of energies. They describe their methods in the journal Nature Physics.

Surfing the wave

"To describe how a laser plasma accelerator works, I use the analogy of a surfer riding a wave," says Wim Leemans, who heads the LOASIS program in Berkeley Lab's Accelerator and Fusion Research Division. "The surfers are the electrons themselves. The waves form when a laser pulse plows through a plasma."

In a plasma, atomic nuclei (ions) are separated from electrons, and immensely strong electric fields can build up between the oppositely charged particles when they are separated by the waves behind a powerful laser pulse. Some of the electrons in the plasma are swept up by the waves and are quickly accelerated to high energy.

"In this case the wave is a tsunami, and it doesn't much matter what the surfers do; they'll be carried along," Leemans says. "That's called self-trapping. But there are other ways a surfer can catch a wave. Real surfers can gauge the size and speed of an oncoming wave and start paddling to match its momentum."

Attempts to create tunable electron beams through momentum-matching have been tried, by injecting electrons into the accelerating field -- first giving them a boost using colliding laser pulses to catch the wave, then using a different drive-laser pulse to excite a wave on which those surfing electrons can be accelerated to high energies. It's an approach that demands sophisticated timing and synchronization, and along with other tuning methods for one-stage accelerators, requires electron injection that's localized in space and time.

"But there's a third way of helping a surfer catch a wave," Leemans says, "and that's by slowing the wave until even slow surfers can catch it -- then increasing the speed of the wave." In other words, a two-stage process -- and this turns out to be the secret to tunable, high-quality electron beams.

For their experiments the Berkeley Lab scientists modified the same 3.3-centimeter LOASIS accelerator and the same 40-trillion-watt peak-power drive laser, dubbed TREX, they used to produce the first billion-electron-volt beam. The accelerator is a block of titanium sapphire with a narrow capillary through it, filled with hydrogen gas that's ionized to a plasma by a jolt of electricity, just before the drive-laser pulse enters.

"Two-stage" acceleration

Slowing the laser wake and then speeding it up requires controlling the wake's phase velocity. To modify the LOASIS system for "two-stage," tunable acceleration, the researchers introduced a supersonic jet of helium gas that passes through the accelerator's hydrogen-filled capillary at the upstream front end. This sharply increases the density of electrons in the subsequent plasma. The plasma density then falls off rapidly downstream.

"The extra density itself serves as a lens to focus the laser to higher intensity, and the laser is focused right where the extra density is beginning to decrease," says Leemans. Here at the edge of the "density downramp," the slower waves trap electrons more readily. "The waves in the wake are falling farther behind the laser pulse as it enters the region of lower density."

Density control is only one way to control wave velocity, however. Another method is through laser intensity -- an unexpected gift from Albert Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity. Leemans explains, "The particles in the plasma waves have slowed because of the increased density, but they're still moving relativistically, near the speed of light,"

Carl Schroeder, a theoretician with LOASIS and an author of the Nature Physics paper, says that "as the laser is focused, its intensity increases, driving larger and larger plasma waves. Larger waves increase the relativistic mass effect. This reduces the frequency of the wave and stretches the wavelength. The peaks of the waves fall even farther behind the laser pulse."

Says experimenter Tony Gonsalves, first author of the Nature Physics paper, "If we simply end the plasma there, we have a stable low-energy accelerator. But with a second stage we can accelerate the electron beam to much higher energy, and we can tune that energy."

The same drive-laser pulse whose wake has been slowed by plasma density and laser intensity now powers into the low-density region of the accelerator; the following waves, carrying their extra load of electron "surfers," rapidly catch up.

"Tuning the energy is possible because by changing the density or location of the higher-density plasma, we can change its focusing power, the intensity of the laser pulse, and how much the pulse spreads out in the following lower-density plasma," Gonsalves says. "This allows us to tune the acceleration length and the final beam energy. The stability we achieve over our tunable range is quite amazing."

By tailoring plasma density in the two zones over the length of the accelerator, the LOASIS researchers were able to tune the energy of the electron beams over a range from 100 million electron volts to 400 million electron volts, while maintaining energy stability to within a few percent.

Leemans says, "Tailoring plasma density longitudinally this way is a concept that shows a new path to the level of sophisticated tuning for accelerators and light sources that users of conventional facilities just take for granted. It's a major step toward perfecting the laser plasma light sources and accelerators of the future."

Man fatally stabs scoutmaster, 76, from behind (AP)

BUNKER HILL, Ind. ? A 76-year-old man has been stabbed to death while leading Boy Scouts on a hiking trip in northern Indiana, and a suspect who battered his mother and killed a dog at their home nearby is under arrest, police said.

The assistant scout leader, Arthur L. Anderson, had stopped to identify a tree on the Nickel Plate Trail in Bunker Hill Sunday afternoon when an attacker approached him from behind and stabbed him in the neck, Indiana State Police said in a statement. Witnesses told police the attack was unprovoked.

Anderson, of Kokomo, Ind., "was doing probably the most innocent thing he could do, leading a group of Boy Scouts," Indiana State Police Sgt. Tony Slocum said. "He was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Officers later arrested Shane C. Golitko, 22, of Bunker Hill, after he ignored a state trooper's attempted traffic stop and led police on an eight-mile chase, the Indiana State Police said in a statement.

Police are holding Golitko without bond on a murder charge and two felony counts of battery at the Miami County Jail. He is due in Miami Circuit Court on Thursday morning.

Slocum said another adult on the hike shielded the two boys, aged 11 and 12, from the horror of the attack, then called 911. Anderson died at the scene despite the efforts of a nearby resident who performed first aid and emergency medical personnel who responded to the 911 call.

Police said Anderson had been involved in scouting for 50 years.

"It was a senseless act," Indiana State Police Detective Tony Frawley said of the attack.

A minute before the 911 call alerting authorities that Anderson had been stabbed, Golitko's mother Valerie Henson, called 911 to report that her son had assaulted her in a dispute at their home, about 150 yards south of the trail, state police said.

Henson told police that after she fled to a neighbor's house, her son walked to the trail where Anderson was later stabbed. She said her son later returned home, smashed up some of their belongings and stabbed the family's two dogs, a boxer and a pit bull. The boxer died.

Henson was treated for a broken arm. Slocum did not say what sparked the attack, nor what prompted the altercation between Henson and Golitko.

Miami County Prosecutor Bruce Embrey said Golitko had been arrested once before for possession of marijuana and went through a diversion program in which the charge was reduced to a misdemeanor.. Slocum said there was no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved in Sunday's attack.

Nick Losekamp, a district executive for the Boy Scouts' Sagamore Council in Kokomo, said Anderson was the assistant scoutmaster for the troop at the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Losekamp said he was a great leader, very much involved in mentoring the boys, training them to lead by example and motivate others.

"He was a nice guy," Losekamp said. "He was pretty much always there."
