For US soldiers, repeat deployments 'definitely take a toll'

The Third Infantry Division is used to being deployed. Now, after multiple deployments to Iraq, the 3rd ID has been sent to Afghanistan for the first time. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

By Lester Holt, NBC News

KABUL ? ?How many deployments for you? Iraq, Afghanistan or both??

In an army that?s been waging war in Afghanistan for 11 years, talking about past deployments is what amounts to small talk on the many bases I?ve visited this past week from Kabul to Kandahar, as well as along the Pakistan border in eastern Afghanistan. Soldiers rattle off the dates and locations of their deployments, and point out fellow soldiers with whom they served.

The Army?s Third Infantry Division moved its headquarters recently from its home base at Fort Stewart, Ga., to Kandahar, Afghanistan. The move marked the division?s first deployment to Afghanistan, but it?s fifth to a war zone in the last 10 years.?

The Third Infantry Division made history in 2003 when it kicked off the war in Iraq as the so-called ?tip of the spear,? driving up from Kuwait straight into Baghdad in what veterans remember as the ?Thunder Run.?

Sgt. First Class Joseph Aiello says he couldn?t imagine back then that he would be in Afghanistan nine years later, still fighting a war.? When the Iraq war began, he was dating his sweetheart Terri. Today they are parents to three small children. Aiello has been on four of the division's five deployments since 2003.

?It definitely takes a toll on family,? Aiello told me. He added, however, that worrying about home and family when you are in a war zone has its risks.

?The minute you lose focus that?s when incidents can start to happen,? said Aiello. ?You need to maintain focus while you?re here to do a job and that?s what we will get done.?

The? Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd touches base with NBC reporters across the Mid-East including NBC's Atia Abawi in Kabul, Martin Fletcher in Tel Aviv, Ali Arouzi in Tehran and Ann Curry from the Syrian border.

Serving on the home front, too
Back in Georgia, Aiello?s wife, Terri, makes her own contribution to the war, as a physical therapist assistant helping wounded vets. At home she has become accustomed to living the life of a single mom.

Photo Blog: Exploring home abroad: Afghan-Americans in Kabul

?A bad day would be having a stressful day [at work] and then going home and the boys are fighting, Alyssa?s cranky and the homework?s not done,? she said about her three children.

She?s learned to push ahead alone. ?Nothing really changes. It?s just that he?s not there to experience everything with us.??

Her sacrifices are not lost on her husband.

?A lot of people say that the soldiers got a hard job and everything like that. But the way I look at it, sir, is I definitely think the wives have the hardest job in the Army,? Aiello told me.

?No different?
Aiello is one of only a handful of Third Infantry Division soldiers with the unit today who were part of the original march into Baghdad back in 2003. The division?s pace of deployments over the last 10 years is nothing short of remarkable, but no more remarkable than the multiple deployments that have become the norm for thousands of U.S. service members.

Eleven years of war have left tens of thousands of service families, like the Aiellos, sharing the void of long and too frequent separations.

Maj. Gen. Robert Abrams, commanding general of the Third Infantry Division and the International Security Assistance Force?s Regional Command-South, underscored the point.

?There are others making equal sacrifices across the army, so we don?t see ourselves any different,? Abrams said.

More than ten years after the beginning of the war, Afghanistan faces external pressure to reform as well as ongoing internal conflicts.

Aiello recalled the long wait for letters from home in those early days following the Iraq invasion. Now he does video chats with his family regularly via Skype, which didn?t exist in 2003.

On the TODAY Show this weekend, dozens of service members crowded around our broadcast location here at the joint task force headquarters for ISAF in Kabul. Many of them carried signs with pictures of the children whose birthdays, and sweet-16 parties they are missing back home.

A suicide bomber in Afghanistan kills at least 14 people, including 3 NATO service members, bringing the US death toll on the ground to 2,000 with 20 percent of American combat deaths stemming from insider attacks. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

The international coalition has set the end of 2014 to withdraw most combat forces from Afghanistan. In the meantime, the United States will continue to ask a lot from so few. The troops and the families will wait for them to return one day and stay home for good.

World's largest solar farm coming to California

Analysts predict First Solar will win the rights to supply NextEra Energy Inc. with solar arrays for what will be the world?s largest solar farm, according to Consumer Energy Report.

By CER News Desk,?Guest blogger / September 29, 2012

The Blythe project, based in southern California, will soon surpass the capacity of Arizona?s Agua Caliente solar farm, a huge facility built exclusively by First Solar, according to Consumer Energy Report.

While the contract hasn?t been finalized, analysts are predicting that First Solar will win the rights to supply NextEra Energy Inc. with solar arrays for what will be the world?s largest solar farm. The two companies are currently working together on the 550-megawatt Desert Sunlight solar farm in Riverwide County, California.

NextEra?s Blythe project, based in southern California, will soon surpass the capacity of Arizona?s Agua Caliente solar farm, a huge facility built exclusively by First Solar that is currently 85 percent complete with 250 megawatts of capacity. Despite the fact that there has been no official word as to who NextEra will choose to build and supply the new project, First Solar is reportedly the only manufacturer of thin-film panels large enough to handle the job, according to analysts interviewed by Bloomberg News; the Blythe project will have a final capacity of 1,000 megawatts, requiring an extensive amount and array of materials.

With the economy currently facing unprecedented turmoil, especially in the renewable energy sector, First Solar has seen its stock drop 68 percent in the past year. Today?s speculation, however, gave the company a much-needed boost, bumping its stock up 11 percent while reminding the industry just how deep its manufacturing capabilities are.

?It would definitely be a positive for First Solar if they were able to win a 1,000-megawatt project,? said Ben Schuman, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities.

Despite the rampant speculation, a spokesman for Florida-based NextEra reiterated that the company has yet to choose a panel provider for the project, suggesting that they may work with more than one supplier.

Authentic Vegetarian Recipes | Indian Traditional Food | Step-by ...

Mung beans are? full of protein.? They can be cooked in several ways. ? For this recipe, I soaked them overnight and then left them covered in a warm place so that they start?sprouting.? ?Making the curry is very?similar?to cooking the simple mung bean curry.

Ingredients (for 3-4 servings):

2 cups of sprouted mung beans
2 tablespoons oil ( I used sunflower oil)
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
2 small pieces of cinnamon sticks
2 or 3 cloves
1 or 2 small dry red chillies (optional)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon chilly powder
2 green chillies sliced through the middle ( if you like hot food!)
1 teaspoon crushed ginger
3-4 cloves of?crushed?garlic
1 tablespoon sugar or jaggery
1 tablespoon lemon juice (can use more if you like sweet and sour taste)
2 cups of crushed tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes can be used but would need to be softened a bit before adding.
a few curry leaves and a small bunch of coriandar

Method

1. To sprout the beans, wash the mung beans and allow them to soak overnight. ?The next morning, remove all the water and keep the beans covered in a warm place. ?I tend to keep these in a see through jug or bottle covered with a dark plastic bag. ?Keep these overnight and they should have?started to?sprout. ?In cold countries, you may have to leave them for half a day more to sprout.?Once?sprouted, wash the mung beans and use in curries or salad. Any extra beans can be frozen to use next time.
2.? Add a litre of water to the mug and boil them until they soften and split - I used a pressure cooker and cooked them for 40 minutes on a medium heat. ?Some people like their mung beans ?runny and can add more water.? I prefer mine to be thick so don't add too much water to them whilst cooking them.? Also, it's always easier to add water to the mug as it is cooking so start off with just a litre of water. Whilst the mung beans are cooking, prepare the spices etc:

3.?? Blend the tomatoes in a bowl.

4.?? Add the tomato puri, salt, turmeric, chilly powder, sugar, lemon juice, the green chillies, crushed ginger, crushed garlic and coriander and curry leaves to the tomatoes and mix well.

5.?? Once the mung beans have cooked - prepare the seasoning.

6.?? Pour the oil in a saucepan and let it get hot.

7.? Add in the cinnamon, cloves, the dry red chillies and mustard seeds to the oil.?The mustard seeds and cloves will pop so keep the saucepan covered.

10.? Add the tomato mixture with all the spices to the oil and stir well.? Cook for 3-4 minutes.

10. Now add the cooked mung beans to the tomato mixture and allow it to cook for 10 minutes.? At this stage, you can either cook it further to reduce the water - or add water to the mung - depending on how you like your mung bean gravy.

11.? Sprinkle?coriander?and serve the mung beans hot with rice or chappatis or porathas.

Local funding supports open access sequencing of the Puerto Rican parrot genome

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? The critically endangered Puerto Rican Parrot (Amazona vittata) is the only surviving parrot species native to the United States. A genomic sequencing project, funded by community donations, has published September 28, in BioMed Central and BGI's open access journal GigaScience, the first sequence of A. vittata, the first of the large Neotropical Amazona birds to be studied at the genomic level.

The Puerto Rican Parrot was once abundant throughout Puerto Rico but destruction of old forest habitats to make way for farming in the 19th Century resulted in a drastic decline in their population. By the mid 1970's only a handful of individuals were thought to remain. Captive breeding programs in Rio Abajo and El Yunque and the release of these birds have had some success, but the number of these birds in the wild is still very low.

In a unique initiative (developing of the Local Community Involvement), funded entirely by contributions from the communities of Puerto Rico alongside staff and students from the Biology Department of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayag?ez, researchers collaborated internationally to sequence this beautiful parrot.

Dr Taras Oleksyk, who organized the The Puerto Rican Parrot Genome Project, explained their findings, "In this project we managed to cover almost 76% of the A. vittata genome using money raised in art and fashion shows, and going door to door asking for the support of Puerto Rican people and local businesses. When we compared our sequence of our parrot, Iguaca, from Rio Abajo to other species of birds, we found that she had 84.5% similarity to zebra finches and 82.7% to a chicken, but her genome was highly rearranged."

Dr Oleksyk continued, "We are very proud of our project and even more proud to be part of a local community dedicated to raising awareness and furthering scientific knowledge of this endangered bird. All the data from this project is publically available in GigaDB which we hope will be a starting point for comparative studies across avian genome data, and will be used to develop and promote undergraduate education in genome science in the Caribbean. Community involvement may be the key for the future of conservation genetics, and many projects like this are needed reverse the current rate of extinction of birds across the globe."

Make Certain You Follow These Tips To Help You Find The Best ...

In the past it has been very hard for anyone which has a trouble with their own credit history to obtain a loan for an additional vehicle. However the market has evolved plus you will find lots of lenders who are ready to assist you with this.

Typically, credit unions and banks avoid offering motor finance loans to individuals who have bad credit and even though they may consider an application for an individual with poor credit, they might charge an extremely high interest rate. In addition to this, they may demand a lot of documentation and also this could make a borrower?s task much more difficult. Consequently, if you?ve bad credit but you want to buy a car, you need to search for lenders who provide poor credit car finance at competitive interest rates.

These lenders generally come together having car dealerships but some will deal with customers immediately. The first thing that you should do when searching for a car finance bad credit option is to decide if you will finance a brand new or even pre-owned vehicle. Remember that obtaining a loan for a brand new vehicle if you?ve bad credit is not always the best choice. It is much better to select a dependable pre-owned vehicle, that is more affordable and you can finish repaying it in shorter period. Additionally you enhance your chances of qualifying for a bad credit car loan if you decide to finance a pre-owned vehicle. If you don?t want to finance a used car, you should choose a low cost design. Keep in mind that you can always have the car you love the next time.

After determining the car to invest in, you need to think of a down payment. The greater the down payment is, the better because it will help you reduce the interest rate you have to pay. If your credit history really is bad, it is advisable to put down at the very least ten to fifteen percent of the car?s rate. You may come up with this type of down payment by saving for a few months before you apply for that auto loan.

The next phase that you need to take is to look around so that you could be able to choose the best bad credit car finance option. It?s always best to get at the very least 5 different quotes before settling on a particular lender. Remember that there are other car financing options apart from car dealerships plus they may provide you better offers. For instance, you could have your own bank finance a car that is being sold by its owner if you could come up with a large down payment.

Another important suggestion to remember while you apply for car financing if you?ve bad credit is that you should only supply the lender with accurate information. Don?t exaggerate your income because this could lead to issues later on if you?re not able to afford the agreed monthly payments. You must also ensure that you carefully see the motor finance arrangement and request clarifications regarding anything you don?t understand.

You must also remember that bad credit car loans are equal to taking personal loans offered by financial institutions. You should therefore comply with the requirements of making monthly payments till you pay off the entire loan balance. Making payments for your car loan as required can help you build your credit and will permit you to qualify for other loans in the future. Ideally, these guidelines on bad credit car finance can help you get a reliable vehicle and rebuild your credit.

A lot of people have been affected by the current recession and also have ended up with a poor credit history which a couple of years ago could have prevented them obtaining virtually any loans. But now you can get car financing with bad credit and you can study more about it if you click the link.
