New Bluetooth standards good news for fitness devices

5 hrs.

An update to the Bluetooth standard is making it easier for devices like Nike+ and the Fitbit, which need to transmit information like steps taken and pedal cadence, ?but had to brew their own solutions for doing so. Now they can use Bluetooth, just like earpieces and other accessories,?to do so.

These popular fitness accessories have been working with juryrigged solutions over the last couple years, which isn't a problem for a big company like Nike to tackle, but a startup on a shoestring budget doesn't have the cash or time to build their own wireless protocol.

The update will allow this type of simple, real-time data flow to happen over a device's?ubiquitous wireless interface that has, in the past, been used almost entirely for audio. It should make it easier for new devices to work with smartphones to do interesting things like combine a map of your bike ride?with your pace.

There aren't any devices using the brand new running- and cycling-oriented profiles just?yet (though there are many that may soon support them), but expect them to show up soon, perhaps at the upcoming CES consumer electronics show in January. More information on the new interface can be found in the Bluetooth Special Interest Group's press release.

San Francisco archbishop-elect arrested for drunk driving

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - San Francisco Archbishop-elect Salvatore Cordileone, known for a conservative stance on same-sex marriage, has been arrested in his native San Diego for drunk driving, police said on Monday.

Cordileone, 56, was stopped on suspicion of driving under the influence on Saturday near the San Diego State University campus, the San Diego Police Department said. Further details of his arrest were not immediately available.

The Vatican announced in July that Pope Benedict had appointed Cordileone, who is currently the bishop of Oakland, as the metropolitan archbishop of San Francisco.

Cordileone is known as a steadfast opponent of same-sex marriage, a stance which has made him a somewhat controversial figure in the largely liberal San Francisco Bay area.

He is replacing Archbishop George Niederauer, who is retiring. Cordileone is to be installed in his new position at a special mass at a cathedral in San Francisco on October 4.

Cordileone is also chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops subcommittee for the promotion and defense of marriage.

A representative for Cordileone could not be reached for comment about his arrest.

Gina Coburn, a spokeswoman for the San Diego City Attorney, which normally prosecutes driving under the influence crimes in the city, said police have not yet presented any case to her office for review.

A lesson in sleep learning

Monday, August 27, 2012

Is sleep learning possible? A new Weizmann Institute study appearing today in Nature Neuroscience has found that if certain odors are presented after tones during sleep, people will start sniffing when they hear the tones alone ? even when no odor is present ? both during sleep and, later, when awake. In other words, people can learn new information while they sleep, and this can unconsciously modify their waking behavior.

Sleep-learning experiments are notoriously difficult to conduct. For one thing, one must be sure that the subjects are actually asleep and stay that way during the "lessons." The most rigorous trials of verbal sleep learning have failed to show any new knowledge taking root. While more and more research has demonstrated the importance of sleep for learning and memory consolidation, none had managed to show actual learning of new information taking place in an adult brain during sleep.

Prof. Noam Sobel and research student Anat Arzi, together with Sobel's group in the Institute's Neurobiology Department in collaboration with researchers from Loewenstein Hospital and the Academic College of Tel Aviv ? Jaffa, chose to experiment with a type of conditioning that involves exposing subjects to a tone followed by an odor, so that they soon exhibit a similar response to the tone as they would to the odor. The pairing of tones and odors presented several advantages. Neither wakes the sleeper (in fact, certain odors can promote sound sleep), yet the brain processes them and even reacts during slumber. Moreover, the sense of smell holds a unique non-verbal measure that can be observed ? namely sniffing. The researchers found that, in the case of smelling, the sleeping brain acts much as it does when awake: We inhale deeply when we smell a pleasant aroma but stop our inhalation short when assaulted by a bad smell. This variation in sniffing could be recorded whether the subjects were asleep or awake. Finally, this type of conditioning, while it may appear to be quite simple, is associated with some higher brain areas ? including the hippocampus, which is involved in memory formation.

In the experiments, the subjects slept in a special lab while their sleep state was continuously monitored. (Waking up during the conditioning ? even for a moment ? disqualified the results.) As they slept, a tone was played, followed by an odor ? either pleasant or unpleasant. Then another tone was played, followed by an odor at the opposite end of the pleasantness scale. Over the course of the night, the associations were partially reinforced, so that the subject was exposed to just the tones as well. The sleeping volunteers reacted to the tones alone as if the associated odor were still present ? by either sniffing deeply or taking shallow breaths.

The next day, the now awake subjects again heard the tones alone ? with no accompanying odor. Although they had no conscious recollection of listening to them during the night, their breathing patterns told a different story. When exposed to tones that had been paired with pleasant odors, they sniffed deeply, while the second tones ? those associated with bad smells ? provoked short, shallow sniffs.

The team then asked whether this type of learning is tied to a particular phase of sleep. In a second experiment, they divided the sleep cycles into rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep, and then induced the conditioning during only one phase or the other. Surprisingly, they found that the learned response was more pronounced during the REM phase, but the transfer of the association from sleep to waking was evident only when learning took place during the non-REM phase. Sobel and Arzi suggest that during REM sleep we may be more open to influence from the stimuli in our surroundings, but so-called "dream amnesia" ? which makes us forget most of our dreams ? may operate on any conditioning occurring in that stage of sleep. In contrast, non-REM sleep is the phase that is important for memory consolidation, so it might also play a role in this form of sleep-learning.

Although Sobel's lab studies the sense of smell, Arzi intends to continue investigating brain processing in altered states of consciousness such as sleep and coma. "Now that we know that some kind of sleep learning is possible," says Arzi, "we want to find where the limits lie ? what information can be learned during sleep and what information cannot."

Foreign Policy: Who Has Romney's Ear?

To hear some advisers tell it, the Romney campaign is really Romney Inc., a smoothly-run organization that efficiently funnels the views of a vast array of foreign-policy advisers through a few key coordinators who brief the candidate. This is a positive contrast to the last time Mitt Romney ran in 2008. ?The last time, it was me, the governor, and five other people sitting around a table. We didn?t do that well,? says Mitchell Reiss, the former head of policy planning at the State Department who is one of a wide selection of advisers Romney brought on from the Bush administration. "Now it?s a $500 million operation ... and there so many more people who have expertise.?

But other advisers inside the campaign say this expertise is still not being well employed, which may be one reason Romney appeared so amateurish during his recent gaffe-strewn tour through Britain, Israel, and Poland. According to one Romney adviser who would discuss the internal dynamics of the campaign only on condition of anonymity, there is an ?experience gap? between the inner circle of people who talk to Romney directly and the many on the outside who have to funnel their views through that inner circle, especially through the young and untested foreign-policy coordinator, Alex Wong.

?A lot of people with experience in government are not in the inner circle,? says this adviser. Some of the former government officials who are nominally on Romney?s foreign-policy advisory teams say they haven?t briefed the candidate personally since 2011. Other advisers speak out or write op-eds on their own,?leading to the perception that there are publicly-aired disputes inside the campaign when in truth few of these advisers are actually in contact with Romney.

The lingering sense that Romney?s foreign-policy views remain somewhat inchoate could affect not only voters? calculations but also possibly those of the Israelis, who are believed to be contemplating whether to attack Iran?s nuclear facilities before the election. While Romney took a hard line in supporting Israel?s right to defend itself on his trip?and he is closer to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is said to favor a strike, than Obama is--he went out of his way to avoid endorsing an Israeli strike.

The disarray feeds Israeli worries about waiting. ?There is a belief that whether Obama or Romney wins, everything is more complicated? for the Israelis if they wait, says David Makovsky of the Washington Institute for Near East Peace. ?If Romney wins, he needs to get inaugurated, name staff, get them confirmed, and do policy reviews. That could take them till next fall,? which may well be beyond the Israeli window for action against Iran?s mountain nuclear site at Fordow, which is under construction.

Meanwhile, however, the Israelis?who are engaged in their own intense debate about whether to strike?hear a cacophony of voices in the Romney camp. ?We?ve got a very big tent. You?ve got a lot of different voices,? concedes another Romney adviser. ?The debate isn?t ?Gee, can we live with an Iranian nuclear weapon,? it?s how you structure a response.? Even so, with Romney playing to his conservative base, ?there hasn?t been a big conversation of how much would he put back into a diplomatic effort? with Iran, the first adviser says.

The Romney foreign-policy inner circle starts with Wong, who bears the expansive title of ?director of foreign, defense, and judicial policy? and who conducts the weekly conference call with advisers. Wong is a 2007 Harvard Law School graduate and a former associate at the law firm of Covington & Burling, but his credentials as a foreign-policy expert are thin at best, amounting to a summer internship at the U.S. mission to the U.N. in 2005. The circle also appears to include Dan Senor, the former spokesman for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq who co-wrote a 2009 book on Israel?s entrepreneurial culture, Start-Up Nation, which was cited by Romney during much- criticized remarks he made at a Jewish fundraiser in July appearing to denigrate Palestinians. Senor, who like Romney is a sometime Wall Street financier with a Harvard Business School degree, accompanied Romney on the Mideast leg of his trip last month.

Reiss is also considered by some to be close to Romney, along with former ambassador Rich Williamson, although by Reiss?s own testimony he himself doesn?t talk to Romney much. He says Wong is the ?gatekeeper,? and the process works well. The internal complaints, Reiss adds, are just ?sour grapes. People aren?t getting face time. They?re not getting stroked the way they might want to get stroked, but the reality is it?s a much bigger operation. There?s no requirement for us to do this in person.?

Reiss adds that ?there are a number of us who have been with him for a while, that have ability to talk to directly when we feel? it?s necessary.... I think all of us refrain? from doing that unless there?s an emergency.? Wong, he adds, ?gives a very accurate and honest reflection of what it is we? re saying,? which often goes to Lanhee Chen, the head of policy, and then to Romney.

The Romney campaign is trying hard to stay on unified message. When National Journal contacted one Romney foreign policy adviser, Ashley Tellis, a former senior adviser to the State Department on India, he declined an interview, saying, ?I?m not supposed to discuss this with anyone. I?m under strict instructions not to.? Another adviser, Princeton scholar Aaron Friedberg, who was former Vice President Dick Cheney?s deputy for national security, simply passed along an e-mail to Andrea Saul, the Romney campaign?s spokesperson.

Saul did not respond to a separate e-mail requesting comment.

Samsung loses $12 billion in market value after Apple ruling

Android Central

Samsung shares dropped 7.5% today following the patent case ruling in Apple's favor late last week. While Samsung has been ordered to pay $1.05 billion to Apple, the real damage looks like it will be the $12 billion in market value lost. Meanwhile, Apple's trading jumped from $663 to $679 over the weekend. Ouch.

Samsung has already voiced their displeasure with the ruling and vowed "We will continue to do our utmost until our arguments have been accepted." I somehow doubt that stoic determination will comfort stockholders, especially if legal talks start steering towards a sales injunction of any kind.

There are still appeals to go through, and considering the legal precedent Samsung has set in international courts, there's a decent chance that they'll go through, but in the meantime their stock price is likely to take a kicking. How many of y'all are Samsung investors? Are you hanging onto your stock through this storm? Is it going to take more of a beating? How much does Samsung really have to worry about seeing as they're still a huge parts supplier for Apple?

The Henry M. Stratton Medal is named after the late Henry Maurice Stratton, co-founder of Grune and Stratton, the medical publishing house that first published ASH's journal Blood. The prize honors senior investigators whose contributions to hematology are well-recognized and have taken place over a period of several years. This year, for the first time, the Stratton Medal will be awarded to two individuals, one in basic research and the other in clinical/translational research. Dr. Ginsburg will receive the 2012 Stratton Medal for Basic Research for his many seminal scientific contributions in characterizing the molecular and genetic basis of inherited bleeding and clotting disorders. Dr. Aster will receive the 2012 Stratton Medal for Clinical/Translational Research for his many breakthroughs in platelet immunology, mainly in drug-induced antibodies, human leukocyte antigen anti-platelet antibodies, and neonatal thrombocytopenia.

Dr. Ginsburg is the James V. Neel Distinguished University Professor of Internal Medicine, Human Genetics, and Pediatrics at the University of Michigan and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Ginsburg has dedicated his medical career to understanding the clotting system and has made many contributions to the field of hematology, including identifying the genetic basis of numerous clotting disorders, such as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), combined deficiency of Factor V and Factor VIII, and von Willebrand disease (VWD). Beginning with the cDNA cloning of VWF in 1985, Dr. Ginsburg and his colleagues demonstrated how different mutations in the VWF gene resulted in the variable subtypes of VWD, a focus which also led to his group's identification and cloning of the ADAMTS13 gene as the cause of TTP.

A member of ASH since 1985, Dr. Ginsburg has served in numerous roles within the Society, including serving as Chair of the Committee on Scientific Affairs, Councillor on the Executive Committee, and a member of the Scientific Subcommittee on Hemostasis (now the Scientific Committee on Hemostasis) and the Scientific Committee on Thrombosis and Vascular Biology.

The quality and impact of Dr. Ginsburg's research have been recognized by numerous prestigious honors and awards. In addition to receiving ASH's 2000 E. Donnall Thomas Lecture and Prize, Dr. Ginsburg is an inductee of the Institute of Medicine and National Academy of Sciences and has been honored with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Merit Award, the American Heart Association Distinguished Scientists Award, and the American Society for Clinical Investigators ASCI/ Stanley J. Korsmeyer Award. Dr. Ginsburg's scientific contributions are only a part of his overall impact on the field of hematology. Another important facet of his contributions is evidenced by the numerous scientists and clinicians that he has mentored over the years, many of whom have made remarkable discoveries in hematology.

Dr. Aster is a Professor of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Senior Investigator at the Blood Research Institute of the Blood Center of Wisconsin. As the CEO of the BloodCenter for more than 25 years, Dr. Aster transformed the then local Blood Center of Southeastern Wisconsin into one of the world's premier academic hematology and transfusion medicine research institutes and the top NIH-funded blood center in the country.

During his more than 40-year career Dr. Aster has been continuously recognized as a scientific leader in hematology and transfusion medicine, bridging the two disciplines together with his work. His accomplishments include the definition of neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenic purpura, post-transfusion purpura, and quinine-induced hemolytic-uremic syndrome as distinct clinical entities, characterization of the molecular basis for many platelet-specific antigens and contributions to the understanding and diagnosis of various forms of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia.

Dr. Aster has served as an active member of ASH since 1964, contributing scientific content to every annual meeting since joining the Society. He has also served as Chair of the Scientific Subcommittee on Immunohematology, Councillor of the Executive Committee, member of the Awards Committee, and Associate Editor of Blood. Dr. Aster has authored more than 300 scientific papers, which have been published in the world's premier scientific and clinical journals, including 43 manuscripts published in Blood. He has been honored with the prestigious NIH Merit Award, the Milwaukee Academy of Medicine Distinguished Service Award, the American Association of Blood Banks Bernard Fantus Award Lifetime Achievement Award, and the America's Blood Centers Thomas F. Zuck Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition to his receipt of numerous honors and awards, Dr. Aster has also served as a mentor to countless young investigators who have gone on to have illustrious careers in transfusion medicine.

"Drs. Ginsburg and Aster have made remarkable advances in hematology and the Society is honored to award them with the Stratton Medal for their contributions to the field," said ASH President Armand Keating, MD, of Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. "Their achievements have advanced our understanding of how genes play an important role in inherited disease and have led to safer blood transfusions that have saved countless lives around the world."

Drs. Ginsburg and Aster will accept their awards at 9:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday, December 11, during the 54th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition in Atlanta.

Hundreds in Joplin, Missouri, rally for Muslims and mosque

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - A rally for Muslims in Joplin, Missouri, drew hundreds of people on Saturday night, nearly three weeks after a local mosque was destroyed by a fire which members of the Islamic community suspect was a hate crime, the organizer of the event said.

The gathering at a city park was promoted on a Facebook page as a way to show "that love is stronger than fear or hatred."

Organizers saw the rally in part as a giving-back to the local Muslim community because their mosque was a relief center for victims of the May 2011 tornado in Joplin, which took 161 lives and damaged or destroyed more than 8,000 buildings.

"It's amazing," rally organizer and college student Ashley Carter said in a telephone interview during the event. "People who are of completely different cultures and beliefs are here having a conversation with each other, which is awesome."

She said hundreds of people took part in the rally, but could not provide an exact number.

Federal and local investigators have not determined the cause of the fire that destroyed the Islamic Center of Joplin, on August 6, but leaders of the local Muslim community suspect it was a hate crime. A small fire also occurred there on July 4.

The fire that destroyed the Joplin mosque happened the morning after a white supremacist shot dead six worshipers at a Sikh temple outside Milwaukee, then killed himself after he was wounded by police. Police and Sikh temple members speculated that he might have mistakenly thought Sikhs were Muslims.

About $406,000 has been raised to rebuild the Joplin mosque. The donations have far exceeded the goal of $250,000, said Kimberly Kester, spokeswoman for the Islamic Society of Joplin.

"There are really no words we can use to convey how appreciative we are and how much this means to us," Kester said. "Everyone is coming together to be a stronger community."
