Helpful Hints For Losing Those Extra Pounds | Health and fitness ...

It can be very vital to lose weight and finding the right plan for you can be difficult. There are lots of diets that can actually cause you harm. The information included in this article can help you lose weight the right way.

When trying to lose weight, it is very important to keep track of what you are eating. When dieters track their food intake, surveys have shown them to be more successful with their weight loss. This fact holds true that people who keep track are losing twice as much weight as people who don?t.

When on a diet, try to lose one pound every week. Trying to lose more than that is just too much. Losing weight quickly is not only unhealthy, you will probably end up putting the pounds straight back on.

You probably know the importance of exercise in losing weight. Plan at least three sessions a week, and target a 40 to 60 minute window. Put exercise into your schedule, whether it be after work or in the morning, so you burn stress as well as fat. Stay as consistent as possible with your exercising and food consumption during your program.

Don?t make the mistake of skipping breakfast when you?re attempting to lose weight. At first, it might seem like neglecting breakfast would mean fewer calories and therefore, more weight loss. If you skip breakfast it will make you hungry throughout the day and you will eat more.

Obese adults often started out as obese children. No responsible parent wants that kind of future for their child. In order to ensure healthy eating habits as adults, you must ingrain those habits in them as children. Get your children interested by teaching them to read nutrition labels on foods. You can also let them help to plan the family meals. When your children grow up, they will thank you.

The rate at which you lose weight depends on how heavy you are to begin with. One or two pounds per week is considered a healthy weight loss, on average. If you?re obese, you might need to double that, at least in the beginning.

Instead of regular butter, eat whipped butter. Butter is an item that many people don?t want to eliminate or replace. Many people love the taste of actual butter. Luckily, you can still eat butter and lose weight. Use whipped butter instead. It contains fifty percent less calories.

Find someone you can exercise with. This way, exercising will feel more like socializing sessions rather than drudgery to lose weight. You and your buddy can give each other encouragement and share stories of successes and failures. You can have such a good time that you look forward to your exercise periods; that will help you lose weight.

Weight loss, as you now know, is a very important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This will let you develop a plan that is right for your situation. Considering all of the tips above is a great place to start.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong Dies

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, is dead at the age of 82. He was the first of just 12 Americans to step on the moon from 1969 to 1972. Guest host Laura Sullivan speaks with science journalist Andrew Chaikin, who knew Armstrong and wrote about his contributions to the space program.

LAURA SULLIVAN, HOST:

It's WEEKENDS on ALL THINGS CONSIDERED from NPR News. I'm Laura Sullivan, in for Guy Raz.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

NEIL ARMSTRONG: That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

SULLIVAN: Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. He died today at the age of 82 after complications from a heart procedure. He was the first of just 12 Americans to step on the moon from 1969 to 1972.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

ARMSTRONG: It has a stark beauty all its own. It's like much of the high desert of the United States. It's different, but it's very pretty out here.

SULLIVAN: Neil Armstrong was known as a private man and gave very few interviews. But science journalist Andrew Chaikin convinced Armstrong in 1988 to speak to him for his book "A Man on the Moon: Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts." Neil Armstrong and Andrew Chaikin grew to be friends.

And Andrew Chaikin joins us now from his home in Vermont. Andrew, that line, one small step, you know, that line said a lot about Neil Armstrong, didn't it?

ANDREW CHAIKIN: Well, what really, to me, said a lot about Neil was the conversation we had about that quote. And I promised him I was not going to ask him about it in our interview because everybody asks him about it, and I already knew the story of how he came up with that quote on the moon just a couple of hours after they landed. But what he said to me was the emotional moment was the landing. That was human contact with the moon. But the rest of the world was so focused on that first footstep that he really had no choice, and he did beautifully, as we all know. He came up with a wonderful quote.

SULLIVAN: As we mentioned, he was a notoriously private man, but you came to know him as a friend. How was Neil Armstrong, the public figure, different from the Neil Armstrong, say, at dinner with his family?

CHAIKIN: Well, I think the thing that people don't realize is, you know, he was so shy. He was really uncomfortable with the attention. And it's ironic that someone who is that way was thrust into one of the most absolutely white hot glares of publicity and celebrity that any human has had to endure. Having said that, when you got him away from that and he felt comfortable, he was warm, he was engaging, he had a really dry, delightful sense of humor, could tell great stories and could laugh. And, you know, he really was a delight.

And the more I got to know him, the more I kind of cherished that about him. But at the same time, I always had this feeling of tremendous admiration for Neil as a pioneer, as an explorer, as really the essence of the test pilot who did what he did, not for his own gratification, but for advancing the state of human knowledge and achievement.

SULLIVAN: Did Armstrong have thoughts on the direction of the U.S. space program later in life?

CHAIKIN: Yes. We talked about that some. He was very distressed at the way that NASA's future had become what he called the equivalent of a badminton shuttlecock getting hit back and forth between Congress and the White House and so on. But I think he was most anxious to see us get back in the exploration game, to get back to the moon and go even farther. But I never doubted his motivation or his passion or his belief that space exploration is part of the destiny of humankind.

SULLIVAN: Do you have any favorite memories of him, anything that jumps out at you when you think of Neil Armstrong?

CHAIKIN: Actually, one of the moments that I think about most is about an hour and a half into the moon walk, Buzz Aldrin had a different task to work on than Neil did, and Neil actually had a minute to be off on his own and explore the area. And he took off running to a crater that was about 200 feet behind the Lunar Lander. It only took him about a minute to run back there and snap some pictures and then another minute to run back, you know? And I often picture him loping in that one-sixth lunar gravity, literally venturing where no human had gone before. And, you know, it's a great little moment of human exploration that I always associate with him.

SULLIVAN: That's journalist Andrew Chaikin speaking about Neil Armstrong who died today at the age of 82. Andrew, thank you so much for joining us.

CHAIKIN: Thank you.

Mindfulness During Pregnancy ? Can It Really Affect My Unborn Baby

?

The moment you see that two red lines, different emotions arise. It?s a mixture of happiness, excitement and of course, worries. You begin to become anxious about the last cups of sodas, wines and coffees you have recently taken in.

Pregnancy can be an overwhelming, thrilling and worrisome experience. The moment you have learned about your pregnancy, you become extra mindful about everything you do and what you take into your mouth. But can mindfulness affect the health of your unborn baby? CERTAINLY!

According to research, pregnant women who are mindful about their health as well as their baby?s health during pregnancy tend to produce healthier and fitter babies. Women who are less mindful about what they eat and what they do, tend to expose their babies to higher risk of suffering from birth defects and other undesirable consequences. So what are the things that you should be mindful about during pregnancy?

Alcohol Consumption
Consumption of large amount of alcohol imposes harm to you and your baby. Though the ?safe amount? of alcohol consumption is still unknown, studies show that alcohol can cause physical and mental birth defects. Binge drinking can also cause damage to the baby?s nervous system and it can trigger the development of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).

Caffeine
Over consumption of caffeine is not good for the body. Intake of over 150 milligrams of caffeine increases a pregnant woman?s risk for miscarriage. Make sure to cut down your consumption of alcohol to give your baby the best possible health. Take note that caffeine does not just refer to coffee. Caffeine also includes green tea, cola, softdrinks and black tea. You can have chocolates but only in moderate amount.

Medications
There are certain medications which you should avoid. Make sure to ask your doctor about the OTC and prescription drugs which are safe and unsafe to use. Some medications impose negative impacts to the health of babies. The use of recreational drugs can actually trigger premature birth, learning and behavioural problems, poor growth and birth defects. If you have used any of drugs during your pregnancy, make sure to consult your doctor about it.

Cigarette Smoking
In whatever circumstances, cigarette smoking is never beneficial to the body. By smoking, you also allow your unborn baby to smoke. You in fact encourage him or her to obtain carbon monoxide and nicotine which are very harmful to the body. In effect, your baby is at a greater risk for low birth weight, premature birth, stillbirth, asthma and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners
Make sure to avoid artificial sweeteners. According to research, excessive consumption of artificial sweeteners can trigger the development of serious health conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson?s disease, bladder cancer and birth defects.

Exercise
Some low-impact exercises are beneficial for a pregnant woman?s body. However, high impact exercises such as bouncing, scuba diving, leaping, jarring, sit-ups, heavy lifting and weight training should be avoided. These exercises can exert too much pressure on the structures found within the uterus which can cause bleeding or premature labour. Instead of engaging in these exercises, perhaps you can do some yoga, swimming, walking and water aerobics.

Bug Spray and Household Chemicals
Avoidance from these chemicals is strongly recommended as they impose drastic impacts to the health of the babies. Frequent exposure to these chemicals can cause birth defects, premature delivery and miscarriage.

Lead
Make sure to avoid materials which contain lead. According to research, exposure to lead can cause premature delivery, developmental and learning delays, low birth weight and miscarriage.

In one study, it was found out that mindfulness can actually help in fighting off stress and anxiety. Also, it is proven to be effective in improving the overall health being of the baby as well as the mother. Women who have undergone mindfulness training during the early stages of their pregnancy earned greater satisfaction and higher self-esteem which results to less emotional distress. This creates positive impact on their delivery and to the health of newborns.

Pregnancy should not really be a worrisome journey. Too much worry and anxiety can just cause stress which can affect your baby?s health if left uncontrolled. Make your pregnancy an enjoyable and exciting experience and follow your doctor?s advices. By so doing, you get a higher probability of having a healthier and stronger baby.

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? A meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected at or near hurricane-strength once it reaches the Florida Keys later Sunday, could become a category 2 hurricane in coming days as it takes eventual aim at the northern Gulf Coast.

Meteorologist Jessica Schauer says the center is currently forecasting Isaac would make landfall late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning somewhere on the northern Gulf Coast. A category 2 hurricane has winds of 96-110 mph (154-177 kph), but Schauer cautions forecasts that far out in time are subject to greater uncertainty.

Earlier Sunday, the center issued a hurricane watch from the mouth of the Mississippi River ? not including the New Orleans metro area ? eastward to Indian Pass., Fla.

TEAM BUILDING FOR A NEW BEGINNING | Linksparadise Article ...

Team building activities ideas are much necessary to bring together different members of a team in workplaces. People with different temperament, mindset, and different methods usually co-exist in companies. Different people come together to form a team and work as one. Team building activities are a way to provide high-impact learning, increase team skills, communication, and boost the morale and groundwork of productivity. Employees benefit from experiencing a sense of accomplishment in working as a team to complete a task and learn possible ways to improve communication skills.

Through the company team building approach people use a very common method of team building in which they can organize sports activities for team members during weekends. Sports activities include indoor games like badminton, table tennis or outdoor games like soccer, cricket and so on. Sporting activities bring blizzards of fun with which the employees can surely enjoy. While corporate team building in Laval uses a different method of team building activities, music, creativity, and interaction constitute the basis of such activity. Using that kind of element can develop team spirit and communicate the organization?s key messages. Team training programs like these develop group cohesion within the company, unveil the full potential of each employee, and maximize the sense of belongingness to the team.

Team building is useful for breaking down barriers between individuals through group participation in activities. Employees who are not used to working together get a chance to participate with each other and work as a team. Team-building activities that highlight communication allow participants to experience for themselves the importance of good communication and develop new ways for accomplishing it. Also in this kind of activity employees can develop team roles, it?s really important to know your role in the team, this way you will be more productive and helpful to your team.

The focal point of Team Building Activities is to build better relationships. It also provides a chance for the team members to participate together in an experience where everyone starts with an equal level of knowledge about the given task. The novelty requires people to draw on and create team process skills to complete the task successfully. The challenge of a new experience also requires employees to collaborate and work together in close proximity, which helps to develop relationships quickly. Finally, the strategic learning allows participants to find the keys to a collective success. Participants quickly become aware of their actions and together they generate optimal solutions. They can then implement and replicate their achievements in the professional context to help improve their performance.

Average bear could be pretty smart

Computer tests of solitary species reveal animals? ability to learn concepts

Web edition : Friday, August 24th, 2012

American black bears that take computerized tests by pawing, nose-bumping or licking a touch screen may rival great apes when it comes to learning concepts.

Using three zoo bear siblings as classroom subjects, comparative cognitive psychologist Jennifer Vonk of Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., and her colleagues presented pairs of pictures to the bears on a rugged computer screen and gave them food treats for pawing the image from a certain category. To demonstrate learning a concept, bears had to figure out what kind of picture would earn a treat and then pick that kind of image from a new set.

One challenge, picking the portrait of a black bear instead of an image of a person, could be mastered by relying on a mix of visual clues such as furriness or snout shape. But picking out all the animals from non-animals ? cars or landscapes, for example ? required finding more abstract connections among pictures that didn?t look much at all alike. ?

At least one of the three bears showed some capacity at each of the five levels tested, Vonk and colleagues report in an upcoming Animal Behaviour.

Bear behavior has been ?very underappreciated,? says comparative ethologist Gordon Burghardt of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.??They?re very smart and they have large brains.? They also live relatively solitary lives, which make them an important contrast to the mostly social animals tested for complex mental capacities to date.

Researchers have proposed that social living may favor the evolution of mental capacities different from those of solitary life, Vonk says. Highly social animals, such as chimpanzees, may need more skills for cooperating or spotting clues to other animals? intentions. For loner species, evolution might hone more physical powers such as spatial memory for finding food or the ability to grasp the mechanisms behind tool use.

The tests in the new study were aimed at homing in on the mental capacities of these not particularly social bears. The bears differed considerably in the challenges they met, possibly because of the order in which researchers presented the tests. One animal learned to tell animals from non-animals but didn?t quite get the ?bears vs. humans? challenge.

All three bears rose to the challenge of computer use, though. When the biggest, Brutus, realized that someone would give him treats for nosing a screen pressed against the fence of the enclosure, ?he wouldn?t let anyone else near the computer,? Vonk says. She spent a lot of time throwing cookies and yelling to herd various bears toward or away from the computer cart. Even with her best efforts, ?they would find ways of opening a little door and barging in on each other?s sessions,? she says.

To understand what the results mean will take a lot more analysis of the tasks themselves, says Lars Chittka at Queen Mary, University of London. The new study suggests that bears? ability to categorize images may be on par with that of honeybees, which don?t have particularly big brains. Yet the bees can learn to categorize diverse images such as flowers, landscapes or green vegetation.

?The real question cognitive scientists need to ask is, what is the computational nature of the task, and what neural circuitry might be required?? Chittka says. ?Once we have answers to such questions, we can then ask questions about their evolution, or the required brain size, or the ?social intelligence hypothesis.? But not before.?

Can Android Revolutionize Spacecraft Design?

An anonymous reader writes "NASA's Ames Research Center is working on a new project designed to drastically cut the cost of launching and operating small satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The project, known as PhoneSat, will see the Android powered Nexus One and Nexus S phones command their very own small scale spacecraft this year in a first of its kind research mission."
