No Surcharge Planned for 48 FPS Hobbit

According to Variety, exhibitors have agreed to price the 48 frames-per-seconds showings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey the same as regular 3D, which is usually $3-$5 more than 2D prices.

Since the high frame rate showings of the movie are not going to be widely available and are restricted to select locations, and may not even be available in all major cities, this bit of news may be irrelevant to most people.

But since The Hobbit is the first major series of movies to be released in 48 fps, and with the industry moving towards that direction, this pricing signal suggests the cost for high frame plus 3D will remain the same as plain 3D when the new format becomes the norm.

As previously reported, Warner Bros decided to protect the emerging format with a slow rollout of the first Hobbit movie due to negative reactions from a 10-min clip shown at Cinema-Con back in April. Attendees complained that the smoothness and clarity of the scenes made the what they're watching seemed less cinematic, likening it to a hi-def TV show.

Since the Hobbit movies are filmed in 48 fps, they actually have to go through a conversion process for them to be shown in regular 2D projectors.

The first Hobbit movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, is scheduled to come out on December 24 this year. It is followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again on December 13, 2013, with the third untitled movie coming in summer 2014.

Businesses and individuals have different document security needs ...

Cloud computing has quickly entrenched itself in the daily operations of both individuals and organizations. Many use services such as Gmail and Spotify without realizing that these are cloud-based technologies.

When it comes to these and other cloud services, there are always questions regarding security. Unlike legacy systems, the cloud requires that data be stored on a third party's servers, thereby removing a degree of control from the data's owner.

Speaking to SC Magazine, several industry experts recently asserted that while security is important for both individuals and businesses, it is critical for organizations to realize that they require more robust protection.

One of the key examples supporting this notion is Dropbox, the cloud-based document storage program, as Ian Turner, vice president and country manager at Intralinks, told the news source.

"For the consumer it is fine, but for a business model people want a service level agreement, as what if the service goes down? What if they lose your data?" he said.

In addition to securing a contractual agreement, many experts recommend that businesses utilize document protection technology that can control which individuals can access a given document.

Apple in China: not as cool as before

These are not happy days for Apple in China. The iconic American brand, outpaced by Samsung in its appeal among Chinese consumers since last year, is now also losing out to other smartphone competitors.

According to IDC, Apple?s share of the Chinese smartphone market by shipments fell by nearly half to 10 per cent in the second quarter from three months earlier. The company came fourth in a ranking topped by Samsung and Lenovo, the Chinese company that is also the world?s second-largest PC vendor.

IHS isuppli, another research firm, even sees Apple as an ?also-ran? in China, trailing, with a market share of just 7.5 per cent, behind Coolpad, Huawei, Nokia and ZTE, as well as Samsung and Lenovo.

Coolpad, a former maker of feature phones that sells mainly in its Chinese home market, is now focused on smartphones as well. Huawei and ZTE, China?s two largest vendors of telecom equipment, are aggressively pushing into the smartphone market as growth in their traditional market for telecom network gear is slowing.

Lenovo leapt from seventh rank to number two with 11 per cent market share in just three months, according to IDC. ?Both Lenovo and Coolpad have been rising pretty fast,? says Kevin Wang, director of China electronics research at IHS.

The difference in the two rankings is caused by different ways of counting shipments, particularly the extent to which subsidized shipments to carriers are counted.

But no matter whether it is fourth or seventh, Apple is clearly no longer Chinese consumers? first choice ? a problem that had already been flagged when the company disappointed investors with its results for the June quarter last month.

That is particularly hard for the US company is that the Chinese smartphone market is more important than ever. The IDC figures show that smartphone shipments overtook those of feature phones for the first time in the June quarter, accounting for 51 per cent of total handset shipments of 87m units in the world?s most populous country and largest mobile market by subscribers.

IHS says Full-year shipments are set to rise 141 per cent.

One reason Apple is falling behind is Chinese telecoms operators? reluctance to subsidise the iPhone enough to make it competitive. While this affects all makers, Apple is especially exposed because its smartphone is the most expensive.

Another headache has been Apple?s reluctance to customize the device for TD-SCDMA, the Chinese homegrown 3G standard used by China Mobile, and thus making itself unattractive to subscribers of the world?s largest mobile operator.

That problem could go away when the iPhone 5 is launched later this year. The device is expected to come with a Qualcomm chip that is TD-compatible.

But there are other disadvantages. With a screen expected to measure 4 inches, the iPhone 5 is no longer cutting edge. ?That would still be smaller than many of its Chinese competitors, which have 4.3-inch or 4.7-inch screens,? says Wang.

Insert Coin: Quikdraw targets lens fumblers and multiple camera packers (video)

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

Quikdraw

Carrying an extra camera body just to avoid scrambling for another lens seems a bit silly, no? Quikdraw wants to run that convoluted method out of town with a holster system that lets you carry Canon or Nikon lenses on your belt and change them in around five seconds. The holder start in a locked vertical position, and to attach a lens you just bayonet it into place, securing the glass and allowing the holder to be lowered. To liberate that fresh prime, you tilt it up and give it a twist, freeing it and locking the carrier in the "ready" position at the same time. Admittedly, packing a gaggle of lenses around your waist may brand you as an overzealous camera geek, but we suspect that those in the market for such a product would hardly care about that. So far, the company has wrangled around $40k towards its $100,000 goal -- if you want to ante up $75 to get one in an EOS or F-mount, draw a bead on the source below.

Eco Friendly Home Improvement: Go Green ... - Go Green Living Tips

So many people are interested in Going Green theses days. Most of us know that Going Green and working to preserve out environment involves every aspect of our lives, including clogged drains. Fortunately there are a couple effective Go Green ways to unclog your drains, without using the scary chemicals.

So, whether you just want natural ways to unclog your drain, safe ways to unclog your drain, biodegradable ways to unclog your drain, or Go Green ways to unclog your drains, I think you will like what you read!

The first tip I can give you to unclog your drain in a safe way that fits the Go Green life style is to prevent a clog in your drain with boiling water. I am starting with prevention first, but do not worry, there will be some tips for unclogging an already clogged drain in a moment.

Once a week take a pot of boiling water and flush your drains. I recommend sing a tea pot for this chemical free way to prevent drain clogs. Less chance of a burn. This simple Go Green step takes only a few minutes of your life and will save your money, not introduce harmful chemicals into the earth?s atmosphere, and keep your drain from clogging as often.

Now, if you drain is already clogged, then try a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to unclog it in a Go Green way. Both vinegar and baking soda are biodegradable and friendly to the earth?s atmosphere.

To unclog your drain in this biodegradable way all you need to do is sprinkle about ? cup of baking soda into the offending drain. Pour in one cup of vinegar. Let this sit and work for about 15 minutes.

Now, flush the clogged drain with boiling water.

Repeat this step as needed.

To prevent clogged drains try investing in one of those little metal hair catchers that slip into your bathtub drain. They cost about $1.50 and can be bought at the grocery store, the drug store, the home improvement store, and even at mega shopping stores! They do not harm the earth and are so affordable.

Finally, if all else fails you can try using a plunger. This will introduce no harmful chemicals into your home. There are a few tricks to using a plunger to unclog a drain though.

First, you need to close of any other openings in the sink or bathtub; this means any other drains or openings. These will keep you from getting the suction you need to unclog the drain.

Now, the section tip is to buy and force cup plunger if you are purchasing a new plunger. They are easier to use and will garner better results. Place your plunger over the drain and compress the air out by pushing towards the hole.

Now, pull back hard and swift. The pull bag action is where you should be strong to pull the clog out and not press it further in. The pull bag motion is what will actually unclog the drain.

Once you have loosened the clog, turn on the hot water to wash the clog down the drain.

Repeat this Go Green method of unclogging your drain as often as needed!
