Apple TV is nothing compared to the iPhone

Apple TV Disruption iPhone

Apple?s (AAPL) vision of the future of television is starting to get interesting. According to recent reports, the Cupertino-based company is in talks with cable providers and content owners regarding a future Apple TV that could be used as a set-top box. Key features would include cloud-based DVR service, social integration and the popular iOS user interface, but it is unclear whether or not content companies are biting. What is clear, according to analysts with?Sanford C. Bernstein and Co., is that even if Apple is successful in launching the new service, it will never stack up to the iPhone.

?While similar challenges have been overcome in the mobile telephony market, the challenges here are far larger and more complex,? Bernstein analysts wrote in a note following a report in The Wall Street Journal.

The note outlines four main reasons that Apple will not be able to disrupt the TV industry as it did with the mobile industry:

  • First, the distributors in video share in the economics of the content that they deliver. Cannibalization matters.
  • Second, the Pay TV business has no analogous hardware subsidy model to the one that prevails in post-paid wireless.
  • Third, the U.S. cable industry has become accustomed to near complete control over the development of set-top box and cable modem technologies (e.g., all the MSO-sponsored Cable Labs work on DOCSIS and tru2way).
  • Fourth, cable MSOs are clearly advantaged over their telco and satellite competitors when it comes to distributing a device that supports both linear and Internet TV ? for reasons of both scale and ability to integrate broadband ?giving them disproportionate negotiating leverage.

Of course no major industry can be disrupted? until it is.

But that?s not to say Apple will succeed. The company?s plans for the future of television remains cloudy at best. Will Apple be able to convince cable company?s that a significant change to their distribution model ? vis-?-vis offering all content on-demand?? won?t lead to a slip in ad revenue? Will consumers eat up an Apple set-top box as they did with the iPhone? Is Apple still prepping an own-brand HDTV?

With momentum in its favor, a massive customer base and more resources at its disposal than any other consumer electronics company, Apple may be the only company right now with a chance of initiating the first major shift we?ve seen in years in the TV industry.

Bernstein is right that the hurdles are much taller than they were for Apple?s iPhone though, and the firm says the ?successful conclusion to the ?talks? reported by the Wall Street Journal is by no means a foregone conclusion.?

Hipstamatic Out Of Film? Camera App Lays Off Engineers And Others

Screen shot 2012-08-16 at 19.01.07Is Hipstamatic, the iPhone photo app that was an early hit on the App Store, on the rocks? TechCrunch understands that Synthetic, makers of the app, has recently had to let go of much of its engineering staff, among others, as part of a wider restructuring as it looks for cash. A number of public tweets (embedded below) also point to people leaving. The news comes as a surprise, given that Synthetic says that it has been profitable since the second week after it launched. It is projected to make $22 million this year (from $10 million in 2011). Contacted for a response to the news, a spokesperson confirmed that Hipstatmatic is restructuring but nothing more:?"Business is moving forward as usual,?and we're heads down focused on making beautiful, creative and fun products for our community and the world." The company to date has never had VC backing.

Get ready for a song and dance | South Charlotte Weekly

The upcoming show for the Streetwise Music Instruction group will include bands, dance artists and other performances to keep the audience on its toes.

Students from Streetwise Music Instruction will share a bit of the spotlight with their counterparts in the Ballantyne Theatre later this month with the Living the Dream concert.

The south Charlotte music studio, based in the Ballantyne Arts Center at 11318 North Community House Road, holds about four concerts a year. But the upcoming show differs from all previous ones with the addition of acting skits and dance performances during intermission as different bands are setting up.

?This is a vision I had while I was working as a guitar instructor,? Carl Mokal, the owner of Streetwise Music, said. ?I always wanted to incorporate the actors, dancers and musicians in one show.?

The time in between band performances is when Mokal doesn?t want to ?close the curtain on 300 people and lose the audience.?? That is where others participating in the show come in.

When opening his studio in 2001 in Charlotte, the music instructor wanted to take everything he learned about playing music and performing into one school.? His goal is to give students hands on experience with performing.

?We are always looking for new and innovative ways to entertain the public,? Mokal said. ?Music is always growing and evolving.? I think people want to be entertained.? I think the days of just playing in front of a crowd are coming to an end.?

With his 300 students Mokal put together a show with five bands, four actors and four dancers.? Bands that will be playing at the concert are Pink Fang, Eclipse, Airbourne, The Furies and Ruinam.? Instructors from Streetwise Music will come together with the lead singers of each band for the finale performance.

All actors and singers in the show are from the acting school and dancing school in the Ballantyne Arts Center.? Performers range from ages 8 to 19, but despite the young ages of the performers Mokal says he treats them like professional musicians, actors and dancers and hopes they act as such.

?This is not a recital.? It?s a concert.? The students know we have to entertain our audience.? We aren?t up there to look cute. We are up there to perform,? he said.

To help students learn how to put on a full performance Streetwise Music also brings in acting coaches and dance teachers for an all around education.? Mokal?s goal by the end of 2012 is to have about 100 more students to extend all his studio has to offer.

The concert is Aug. 26 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at Central Piedmont Community College?s Halton Theatre in Charlotte, 1206 Elizabeth Ave. Tickets range from $8 to $12 and can be purchased online at www.tix.cpcc.edu.

How to keep fast 802.11n Wi-Fi speeds by switching old iOS devices to Bluetooth connections

Not all iOS device Wi-Fi speeds are created equal. If your family has a mix of devices, like an iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and iPod touch 3, it can be difficult to get maximum performance from your Wi-Fi router. The iPad can do fast 802.11n on the relatively clear 5GHz frequency. The iPhone 4S can do fast 802.11n, but only on the more cluttered 2.4GHz frequency. The iPod touch can only do slower 802.11b/g, and only on 2.4GHz. Even if you have a dual-band router, like Apple's latest AirPorts, even as the iPad zips along at 802.11n on 5Ghz, the slower iPod touch or even an iPhone 3GS will force the iPhone 4S down to 802.11b/g on 2.4GHz. So what's a geek to do?

If you have a desktop computer or server that stays on most of the time, you can set up Bluetooth tethering for your older devices, getting them off Wi-Fi and letting your 802.11n devices speed along unhindered. It's a bit of a workaround, and your Bluetooth-connected devices will be limited to 20mbs, but the slower slows will also give you faster fasts on your more modern devices. For me, that's a great tradeoff. If you agree, here's how to do it on OS X Mountain Lion.

On you iPod touch

  1. Launch Settings.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Tap on Bluetooth.
  4. Turn Bluetooth to On.

On your Mac:

  1. Launch System Preferences .
  2. Click on Network.
  3. Ensure that you have a Bluetooth PAN device in your left hand column. (If not, add one.)
  4. Go back to the main System Preferences pane.
  5. Click on Sharing.
  6. Enable Internet Sharing.
  7. Share your connection via Wi-Fi (or if wired, via ethernet)
  8. Enable the Bluetooth PAN option.
  9. Go back to the main System Preferences pane.
  10. Click on Bluetooth.
  11. Click on the + button to set up a new device
  12. Wait for the wizard to discover it, then pair your iPod touch.

Back on your iPod touch

  1. Launch Settings.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Tap on Bluetooth.
  4. Tap on the newly created Bluetooth connection.

That's it. Now your older, slower devices have been offloaded onto Bluetooth, and your newer devices can blaze ahead on fast 802.11n!

If you have any other tips on handling multiple devices, and multiple generations of devices, for your family, let me know!

Muamba retires after suffering cardiac arrest

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:13 p.m. ET Aug. 15, 2012

BOLTON, England (AP) -Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba retired from football Wednesday after suffering an on-field cardiac arrest in March during an FA Cup quarterfinal against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Muamba travelled to Belgium last week to seek further medical advice from a cardiologist after consultations in Britain and Europe, and has been advised to retire from playing at the professional level.

"While the news is devastating, I have much to be thankful for," Muamba said. "I thank God that I am alive and I pay tribute once again to the members of the medical team who never gave up on me."

Muamba collapsed to the pitch in north London on March 17, where the game was immediately abandoned.

Andrew Deaner, a cardiologist who was in the stands when Muamba collapsed, left his seat and rushed on to the pitch to help treat him.

Muamba's heart stopped beating on its own for 78 minutes, but started again after arriving at the London Chest Hospital. He was eventually discharged on April 16.

In May, Muamba returned to Bolton's Reebok stadium to a standing ovation and tearfully acknowledged the crowd.

"Football has been my life since I was a teenage boy and it has given me so many opportunities," Muamba said. "Above all else, I love the game and count myself very lucky to have been able to play at the highest level.

"I would also like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my career, and the Bolton fans who have been incredible."

Bolton manager Owen Coyle praised Muamba's character during his recovery.

"Everyone has seen what a fighter and strong person he is in mind and body," said Coyle. "We know that he will go on to achieve great things and within all this disappointment, the most important thing is that he is here, alive, today."

The 24-year-old Muamba began his career at London club Arsenal before joining Birmingham in 2007. He signed for Bolton the following year.

Muamba played 211 games in all competitions during his professional career, scoring six goals.

The other Paul Ryan plan: $800B in Medicaid cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congressman Paul Ryan's plan for Medicare gets all the attention, but the GOP vice presidential candidate has proposed even bigger changes to medical care for the poor and disabled.

The Wisconsin congressman is calling for states to take over the Medicaid program.

At the same time, Ryan's budget would reduce projected federal spending on Medicaid by about $800 billion over 10 years, shrinking the program as a share of the overall national economy.

Ryan is in sync with his new boss, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Advocates for the poor and nonpartisan analysts say cuts would result in millions of vulnerable people losing health insurance. Republicans say that won't happen if states can make the program more efficient.

Medicaid serves nearly 60 million people.

Can we talk about health education classes? - Around the Dinner ...

So...the start of the school year?is looming... My son will be in a mandatory 9th grade Health/Physical Education class that includes some coverage of eating disorders (I have not yet seen the specific material), a nutrition unit that requires students to keep a food diary, etc., and?heart rate monitoring for some fitness requirements. ?I have discussed this generally with the guidance counselors and arranged for a 504 plan (individualized education plan) so that?he?can be given alternative?assignments to accomodate our concerns.?

So, what's the dilemma?? The dilemma is that our therapist is now on the fence about this, as it would call attention to his illness (not generally known, though certainly speculated, I think),?that he will need to deal with triggers, blah, blah.??I have a feeling that my husband will also feel this way -- we have not discussed it yet.? Your thoughts or experience would be welcome!? Thanks.

This doesn't specifically address your question and I don't know the status of your son's recovery.? However, my?17 year old d?was in IP PHP this summer for 22 days.? Although she was weight restored, she was still having difficulty with body image, fear foods, etc. and other co-occurring issues and wanted to go IP to work on these things intensively.? In the body image experential program one of the things they did was to go to Barnes and Noble and spend time in the diet section looking at books and talking about how ridiculous the things in the books were.? She found this VERY helpful.? The point as you say is that she would have to learn to deal with this.? Although this was? helpful for her, I would think that you would have to evaluate the needs of the individual child, point in recovery, etc.?

My d did just start back to school and was worried about assigned lunches (they use a mod schedule, so they vary by day for the first grading period) and how she would handle it if certain "triggering" people were in her lunch.? I said that we could talk to counselors to fix if it was an issue.? She said that after being out of school almost all of last spring she just wanted to go back and be normal and not draw any unnecessary attention to herself.? I agreed, but will be keeping an eye on it to be sure all of lunch was eaten, weight maintained, etc.? I only mention that because it is such a big deal to her right now to just be "normal."? Not that she can let down her guard, but to just seem like a normal girl at school.

i have to ask the same question....what is more important not drawing attention to illness, not exposing to triggers, OR protecting from significant relapse.? Last year in 8th grade while mostly recovered, phase 2, w.r and eating independently my dd went through middle school health class including section on e.ds.? She came home teliing me how some of the stuff teacher was saying was plain wrong but she sat through it and got an A. She said it was kind of difficult since no one knew about her ed but she just quietly got through it.? Now heading to high school... i need to check the curriculum. IF it includes more than brief discussion taht my dd can just ignore and quietly get through, then we may have to get waiver. Also, if it includes any of those blasted movies like FOOD inc?or whatever then she will definitely get a pass or be absent those days. I WILL NOT let some damn video ruin her recovery by forcing her ideas about vegan or vegetarian diets.....ugh!!! I know my dd and I know her sesibilities about animals and she would be a mess if she saw these. Im sorry...i know several young girls that have completely ruined themselves because of the influence of these videos. One had ed prior and becoming vegan just complicated things for her. Another, not ed that i know of, but just wasted away, unhealthy and does not enjoy life any more since she can't enjoy food.? so, I am checking with school soon re their curriculum and these videos.

Throughout 3 years of middle school (5 - 7 grade)?we arranged for dd had excuse to go to library as library aide during health class while they were doing any nutrition, ed, or exercise?related curriculum.? The kids just thought she had a special work study type assignment. Some of them knew I am sure, but we never talked to the kids or class about it. Talked with school principal, nurse and health teachers about what was going on, what was needed from them. Last year, Eighth grade, new school, new town, new start and dd was well into recovery....so only one private talk with school nurse...and only because of surgery and meds that she had to be aware of. no accomodations. She did fine.? We will see about high school.

I will be watching for others ideas here....

That's a great idea to have the option of doing at-school volunteer work instead of health classes that aren't good for a kid with ED.

I could sugarcoat this, but I'm gonna be direct:? NO to health class and NO to physical education.? It's just NO.? These are risks.? And when you're the mom and in you're in charge of your child, then you have to?be in charge and tell people what you want &?need for your child.? The therapist isn't in charge, you are.? The school isn't in charge, you are. [Note how i've left out the husband stuff...]

Every state has waivers and alternatives for classes, so don't let anyone tell you that your child must take those classes--it's not true.? Call your state's public education department if you need the specific laws to support your demands.? You don't need a 504 to say NO--I never got one for my D--you just need the specific laws which describe the student's right to alternatives.

The subject matter of health class and physical fitness might not even be triggers for certain children.?[I don't like the word "trigger," but that's another discussion for another time.]? However, I still say NO to both because?you cannot control what teachers say and do, so why risk it.? Teachers and kids say stupid things all day at school about health and food and exercise, but why risk problems in a classroom environment.

Some might say, "Oh you can't protect your kids all the time!" But these kids need our protection.

Side note:? recently, I was at a meeting with my local health department and they were lamenting that they can't track and measure kids BMI and weight in public schools anymore--their priorities are?obesity treatment and prevention, and this mentality is everywhere.

Global activists gear up for Pussy Riot rallies

MOSCOW (AP) ? The global campaign to free Pussy Riot is gaining speed: Supporters of the punk provocateur band are mobilizing this week in at least two dozen cities worldwide to hold simultaneous demonstrations an hour before a Russian court rules on whether its members will be sent to prison.

Friday's rallies will ride a wave of support for the three women who have been in jail for more than five months because of an anti-Putin prank in Moscow's main cathedral. Calls for them to be freed have come from a long list of celebrities such as Madonna and Bjork. Protests have been held in a number of Western capitals, including Berlin, where last week about 400 people joined Canadian electro-pop performance artist Peaches to support the band.

In one of the most extravagant displays, Reykjavik Mayor Jon Gnarr rode through the streets of the Icelandic capital in a Gay Pride parade this weekend dressed like a band member ? wearing a bright pink dress and matching balaclava ? while lip-synching to one of Pussy Riot's songs.

Although the band members and their lawyers are convinced that the verdict depends entirely on the will of President Vladimir Putin, and prosecutors have asked for a three-year sentence, activists hope their pressure will ease punishment or even free the women.

Putin has said the women should not be judged too harshly, but he risks appearing weak if they walk free.

Amnesty International has declared the women prisoners of conscience and collected tens of thousands of petitions to be sent to the Russian government. So far, though, the human rights group said it has been blocked from delivering them. Two boxes containing 70,000 petitions were taken to the Russian Embassy in Washington on Tuesday, but a Russian diplomat carried them outside and dumped them on the sidewalk, Amnesty International spokeswoman Sharon Singh said.

"He did not want them anywhere on Russian soil," she said by telephone on Wednesday. Repeated calls to the embassy went unanswered.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich were little known before their brief impromptu performance in Christ the Savior Cathedral in February. Dancing and high-kicking, they shouted the words of a "punk prayer" asking the Virgin Mary to deliver Russia from Putin, who was set to win a third term in a March presidential election.

They were arrested on charges of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years. Since then, they have been vilified by the state media, while winning over hearts at home and abroad.

About 20 supporters wearing colorful balaclavas held a brief protest on the steps of the cathedral on Wednesday, each holding up a letter to spell out "Blessed are the merciful" in Russian.

"This action was done in support of the girls," said Anna Tashina, 18, who was one of at least two protesters detained by police. "We wanted them to know that we are with them, that they haven't been forgotten."

Madonna also donned a balaclava during a concert in Moscow last week and had "Pussy Riot" written on her bare back. Yoko Ono sent a personal message to Samutsevich, saying that "the power of your every word is now growing in us."

A group of leading British musicians, including Pete Townshend of the Who and members of the Pet Shop Boys, published a letter in the Times of London ahead of Putin's visit during the Olympics to urge him to give the Pussy Riot members a fair hearing.

On Friday, activists in more than a dozen cities are expected to take to the streets beginning at 2 p.m. Moscow time (1000 GMT), an hour before the judge is to issue the verdict. The protests are being coordinated by the defense lawyers.

Venues vary from the square outside the ornate Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona to the yard outside the Russian Embassy in London.

In Paris, the protest will be held on Stravinsky Square and led by 29-year-old Alexey Prokopyev from Russie-Libert?s, a Paris-based organization formed in December to bring together Russians studying or working in France.

"Most people go to these rallies in Paris because we cannot be in Russia at the moment for various reasons ? because of jobs, classes," said Prokopyev, who was born in the Soviet Union and has spent most of the past 17 years in France. "We all wish we were in Moscow now, but since we can't we do it in Paris."

Russie-Libert?s also is helping to organize rallies in Marseille, Nice, Lyons and Montpellier.

Wearing balaclavas, activists protested earlier this month on the iconic Alexander III bridge, named after the Russian czar who was France's ally in the 1890s.

Prokopyev said that he and his peers "want Russia to be a normal country" and be able to elect a president "who doesn't make the country where we were born a laughingstock."

In New York, Friday's protest will take place outside the Russian Consulate and later on Times Square.

"It's absurd that this case is being treated as criminal, while in any other civilized country that would be merely an administrative offense," said Xenia Grubstein, a 31-year-old journalist helping to organize the New York protest.

She said the hope was that the louder people speak out against the Pussy Riot case, the greater the chance that the verdict will be fair.

A protest is also planned in Washington, where last month punk rockers and arts activists rallied outside the Russian Embassy.

The U.S. State Department has expressed concern about what it called the "politically motivated prosecution of the Russian opposition and pressure on those who express dissenting views."

In France, Culture Minister Aurelie Filippetti last week issued a statement expressing concern that artistic freedom was on trial.

A German cross-party group of lawmakers sent a letter to the Russian ambassador calling the five months the band members have spent in custody and the possible prison terms "draconian and disproportionate" punishment.

"In a secular and pluralistic state, peaceful artistic activities ? even if they may be seen as a provocation ? should not lead to accusations of a serious crime and long prison sentences," the lawmakers said in the letter, which more than 100 members of parliament signed.

The international press has been full of critical reports from the trial. One of Germany's most influential magazines, Der Spiegel, featured the band on its cover with a picture of Tolokonnikova behind bars and the headline "Putin's Russia."
