3 young actors seize the day, go 'On the Road'

CANNES, France (AP) ? Kristen Stewart understands the lure of the open road. So do her "On The Road" co-stars, Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley.

The three young actors play the central love triangle in Walter Salles' adaptation of Jack Kerouac's Beat Generation novel, an experience that has helped them appreciate why the book is considered a classic.

The tale of wannabe writer (and Kerouac surrogate) Sal Paradise and his friend Dean Moriarty crisscrossing the United States in search of freedom and the elusive "it" was published in 1957. But Stewart said the way it captures the heady feeling of young adulthood is timeless.

"You're so filled with something that is hard to identify at this age," said the "Twilight" star, who plays Dean's teenage bride Marylou, a free spirit torn between the lure of adventure and desire for a more settled life.

"You're just bursting, and (the characters) value that so much," said Stewart, who is just 22 herself. "They don't ignore it. That celebration of youth and exploration is just something that you envy.

"I read it right at the point when I was about to get my (driver's) license, and I thought, wow, I want to meet people who push me the way people push each other. I wanted to be more like them."

Minnesota-born Hedlund ("Troy," ''Tron: Legacy") plays the carnal, vital Moriarty, a character modeled on Kerouac's friend Neal Cassady. He said some things have changed since Kerouac wrote his freewheeling, impressionistic story,

"Back then a car was 100 bucks and all you had to choose between was a radio and a heater, and things seemed a little freer," said the 27-year-old actor. "The roads seemed more open than they are today, but a young person's ambitions are still the same. Everybody between the ages of 17 and 21 or 22 still feels that they can achieve anything they want in life if they are ambitious enough."

"On the Road," which premiered this week at the Cannes Film Festival, has been a long time coming. Kerouac, who died in 1969, hoped to see his book filmed, and actors linked to an adaptation over the decades range from Marlon Brando to Brad Pitt.

Brazilian director Salles, who made the Che Guevara road movie "The Motorcycle Diaries," has been involved since 2004, spending years interviewing surviving Beat Generation figures for an unreleased documentary on the book.

He finally got the go-ahead, with Francis Ford Coppola's son Roman Coppola producing, to shoot a film whose fourth main character is the American landscape ? though Salles had to travel far and wide to recreate the 1940s U.S. setting. The movie was shot in Canada, Chile and Mexico as well as the United States.

The film opened in France this week and is due for a fall release in the U.S.

The actors felt the weight of expectation from the book's millions of fans, but say it helped them form a bond ? albeit one less erotically entangled than that of their characters.

"We were the only people there who really know and understand what it feels like to be gifted, or burdened, with the responsibility of playing these characters," said Riley, whose breakthrough role was as Joy Division singer Ian Curtis in "Control." ''So we really did have that sort of feeling that we're separate from the others.

"Garrett and I particularly spent six months in one another's pockets," said the 32-year-old British actor. "I have friends where I don't know if I could spend that much time with them. And for a Yorkshireman and a lad from Minnesota ? two young actors who both have their own ambitions ? it could have been an absolute disaster, a clash of egos. But Garrett was always there for me to lean on, and vice versa."

Salles had firm ideas about the actors he wanted for the film. The cast includes Kirsten Dunst, "Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss, Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge and Viggo Mortensen as characters inspired by real-life Beat generation figures.

"I felt like it was cheating or something, that we had the best cast, in my mind, that's ever been assembled," Hedlund said. "Maybe there was something about each and every one of us that was similar to him in a way, to (explain) why we got along the way he did. There was no rotten egg within the bunch, and that's so rare."

The director said he was determined to cast Stewart even before "Twilight" made her a star, after he heard raves about her performance in the Sean Penn's 2007 Alaskan drama "Into The Wild."

"I remember writing down the name," Salles said, "so I wouldn't forget it."

The Death Of Internet Marketing As We Know It? | Internet Marketing ...

Change is in the air. You can just feel it, can?t you? It?s inevitable really. Everything changes. Life, the environment, our bodies, love/hate, and even business. As a student of ?Internet Marketing? as an industry, I have noticed many changes over the past few years, many of which are causing dramatic shifts in how business online works, and how consumers spend money and how ?gurus? make it.

I think it?s pretty obvious to say that a changing and depressed economy, combined with the fact that consumers have become more educated than ever, has resulted in a huge shift in how Internet ?gurus?, and the rest of us without such famed guru status, do business online. Case in point, there?s a lot of disgust and anger in the air these days online. Same as in the real world in this soon to be very vitriolic Presidential election year here in the US. That?s just the world we live in now.

There has always been industry insider gossip and finger pointing, but now those same thoughts are starting to bleed out into the fringes; Into the ?real world? where regular, non-Internet geek people are getting a glimpse on how this all works. In this piece at The Verge, the author focuses on calling out unscrupulous ?gurus? about their boiler room practices of ripping off Grandma?s social security checks through ?Internet Marketing? scammery. The title of the piece is, ?Scamworld: ?Get rich quick? schemes mutate into an online monster ? A network of pitchmen have used the internet and fear of a failing economy to play the ultimate long con.? The video is fascinating, but mostly just entertaining.

I believe this is a hacky piece to say the least. It focuses on a few really bad apples and lumps in some quality people who don?t practice tactics that are unethical. Sure, sure, ALL of these people sell the dream. The dream of getting rich. The dream of independence. The dream of living the life you want. But if you?re going to condemn people for selling the opportunity to live a better life, you better send me off to jail right now as well. Because I?m guilty too.

Yeah, I have a series of books called Business Around a Lifestyle, but no, not anywhere in those books do I say that you get get rich overnight without work. Nowhere in any of my marketing materials that I?ve ever put out do I claim that it?s super easy to make money overnight in your underwear from your den. Nowhere, anywhere at any time have I ever told someone that I guarantee they?ll be successful or have I ever taken someone?s money for a job that I knew could not afford it.

Which is why I have such a stellar reputation in the industry. But it?s also why I?m not sitting on a beach retired in Cabo San Lucas. Because I won?t become unethical just to make money. There?s lots of people just like me out there who have the same ?problem?. David Risley, Chris Garrett, Johnny B. Truant, David Siteman Garland, Sonia Simone and Derek Halpern come to mind. There are many more, and I?m sorry to leave you off. I?m writing fast.

The industry is changing to the needs/wants of the consumer. You?re no longer seeing the same ?$2k product pitches? that you saw so prevalent over the past 2-3 years. Why? Because nobody is buying them anymore. First off, in this crappy economy, who?s got $2k to spend anymore, and secondly, most people have been burned multiple times and are now gun shy, and using the power of the Web to talk about their unhappiness and dissatisfied experiences.

Let?s Fix It?

David Risley, mentioned above, just recently made a huge branding change. He went from branding hisname.com, to branding a business name (Blog Marketing Academy). In his epic rant entitled ?Why the Making Money Online Niche Is Broken? David says?

Over the last few days, I?ve told you that I am making some changes to my company. I?m not yet going to divulge every detail of that, but I AM going to tell you why I?m doing it.

It is because the ?make money blogging? space that I?m in is inherently BROKEN.

? and the ?gurus? of this space have failed.

And the result of this is plain as day. Most bloggers are:

Confused on what to do.
Overwhelmed.
Concentrating on the wrong things? if they even have a real focus at all.
Not making any money.
Not seeing much (if any) web traffic.

Now, you tell me?. with ALL these people (yes, myself included) teaching people how to make money blogging ? and ALL these people reading our sites, don?t you think we?d have a little better success rate?

I mean, something is inherently wrong with the SYSTEM if all these people are out there consuming this stuff ? and yet most aren?t making it.

It isn?t a surprise that this niche is becoming full of freebie seekers and skepticism. All these people are selling stuff and yet people still can?t connect the dots. It is only NATURAL to start getting skeptical.

Makes sense to me. David?s right. The entire model is broken, and it?s in flux. You can put ?some? of the blame on the consumer for not taking action. But you can also put some of the blame on the person selling them the information and not supporting them all the way through. Which is I believe, David?s point. The problem with supporting someone from beginning to end is that it?s hard work, and requires time and effort. It?s far much easier, and profitable to just sell an information product in a box and walk away and say ?hey, I gave you all the info, you just didn?t follow through?.

But to David?s and my point, it can?t continue that way. Consumers want more, and frankly, should expect more. I?ve always thought of myself as a teacher. My mother taught English to 7th graders for over 30-years. For the past 4-years or so I?ve taught Internet Marketing to students at the University of San Francisco?s Internet Marketing Certificate Program. I love teaching. It?s extremely satisfying to help students work through business models and learn the industry step-by-step. They feel progress along the way and I feel like I?m invested in their success. Everyone wins.

But it?s hard work, and it doesn?t make you rich overnight. The alternative is to just drop all my knowledge and skill into a 22-disc DVD set and send it out to customers and say ?Hey, learn this and make millions?. Meanwhile, I?m sitting on a beach someplace. Unfortunately for me, I can?t bring myself to do that. Because to REALLY help people succeed, you need to give more than just a DVD set. You need to dig in and walk them through and invest in their future.

More Factors In The Shift?

The ?gurus? felt the heat from the government and lawsuits and have backed off a bit over the past few years. What?s happening now is they?re all trying to figure out the next way to get back in business. Some are ?going legit? by creating agencies and brands that help other people do what they did. Others are just sitting on their big piles of cash and waiting for things to calm down. But they?ll be back.

You can tell things are changing because you?re seeing more discounted offers than ever before. Half-offs, free even. You can?t sell the same old crap that you used to sell. It?s not that easy anymore. Even with fancy sales copy. Consumers have gotten smarter. They can smell bullshit from 100-miles away now, and they?re becoming immune to ?special offers? as they existed before.

This not to say that tactics like scarcity and exclusivity and bonuses and long page sales letters don?t work anymore. They still do. In fact, they still work pretty darn good. They just don?t work ?as good? as they used to. Which makes it harder for those that used those tactics to keep the gravy train full of cash running as fast and heavy as it used to.

Is Internet Marketing Dead? No.

Of course it?s not dead. In ways it?s bigger and better than ever. But it?s changing. Authenticity is key. Your reputation means everything. I can tell you that many of the ?gurus? that have made a fortune online over the past 10-years or so are really good people. But because of how they made their money, they are not thought of as fondly as they wish they were. In fact, many are hated, and I?m telling you right now, it bothers them, despite what they say. Unfair? Sure, but it?s part of the business. It?s unfortunate for them now that they have to deal with being lumped in with real criminals.

The truth is that most of these people are dying to be loved. They really do care. To them, they did nothing wrong except try to help people. They truly believed that if someone would take the information they have provided, they could be successful just as they were. And frankly, most of them are right about that.

So that leaves us with where to take it in the future. Grinders like me and David and the others mentioned already know what to do. Continue to provide high-quality, problem-solving support and training and information over and over and over to people who want/need it, for a fair price. The ?gurus?? We?ll just have to wait and see what they come up with next. What do you think?

Iran may seek "tactical gain" with U.N. nuclear deal

VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran and the U.N. nuclear watchdog are making headway towards a framework deal on how to tackle concerns about its atomic activity, diplomats say, a potential bargaining chip for Tehran in next week's negotiations with world powers.

Iran says such an agreement is needed before it can consider a request by U.N. inspectors to visit the Parchin military site where they believe explosives tests relevant for developing nuclear weapons may have been carried out.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Iran held talks this week in Vienna and are due to meet again on May 21, two days before Tehran and the six global powers discuss the future of its disputed nuclear program in Baghdad.

Western diplomats accredited to the U.N. agency said Iran seemed keen to agree a so-called "structured approach" - an outline of how to address the IAEA's questions - ahead of Baghdad in the apparent hope of gaining leverage there.

They say they would welcome any sign that Iran is prepared to stop four years of stonewalling an IAEA investigation based on Western intelligence suggesting the Islamic state has researched ways to acquire the ability to produce nuclear bombs.

But they caution that it remains to be seen whether an understanding with the U.N. agency is implemented in practice, saying Iran in the past has used procedural haggling as a way to buy more time as its nuclear program advances.

"There are still some outstanding issues but there is a possibility an agreement is reached on Monday," one Western diplomat said. It would be "a step forward on the process side," he said, suggesting it would signal real progress "if it gets us to where we can finally address substance."

He said it would be a relatively brief document on the scope and principles of how to pursue talks regarding possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear program: "No real details. Just a precursor to starting to ask real questions."

The U.N. nuclear watchdog, tasked with preventing the spread of nuclear weaponry in the world, has made it clear it will only sign up to something that would enable it to carry out its investigation without restrictions, and not "tie our hands".

Two previous rounds of talks in Tehran early this year failed to make any notable progress. But both sides were more upbeat after the May 14-15 meeting in the Austrian capital, raising hopes of a possible outcome when talks resume on Monday.

A non-Western envoy said: "Progress has been made. My impression is that both sides have the willingness to move forward."

Iran denies having a covert atomic bomb agenda, saying it is enriching uranium only for a future network of civilian nuclear power stations and a medical isotope reactor.

NUCLEAR "PLEA-BARGAIN"

Analyst Ali Vaez forecast a deal between the U.N. nuclear agency and Iran which could be both "substantive and symbolic" but the final resolution of the IAEA's outstanding issues would depend on the outcome of higher-level diplomacy.

"For Iran, a tactical gain in Vienna can potentially become a strategic gain in Baghdad. Cooperation with the IAEA will put Iran one step ahead" of the six powers in the Iraqi capital, said Vaez, of the International Crisis Group think-tank.

But Iranian expectations of getting something in return for cooperating with the IAEA may be disappointed as any scaling back of sanctions would take an "incredible amount of time," said analyst Gala Riani of Control Risks, a consultancy.

"We would need much more significant moves by Iran."

The West's main goal in Baghdad is to get Iran to stop the higher-grade uranium enrichment it started two years ago and has since expanded, shortening the time needed for any weapons bid. Iran says it needs the uranium enriched to a fissile concentration of 20 percent for its medical research reactor.

Enriched uranium can be used to fuel nuclear power plants if refined to low levels, Iran's stated aim, or provide the core of a nuclear bomb if processed to the 90 percent level - which the West fears is the Islamic Republic's latent purpose.

Iran and the powers involved in nuclear diplomacy - the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany - revived negotiations in Istanbul last month after a 15-month hiatus during which the West sharpened sanctions to an unprecedented degree - targeting Iran's oil trade and banks.

The resumption of diplomacy offers a chance to defuse that tension as well as worries about a new Middle East war.

Israel, widely thought to have the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal and convinced a nuclear Iran would pose a mortal threat, has - like the United States - not ruled out air strikes to stop Iran's atomic progress if it deems diplomacy has failed.

Making clear his doubts about the prospects for diplomacy, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran was likely to use the talks with world powers to buy time.

"It looks as though they see the talks as another opportunity to delay and deceive," he told reporters in Prague. "Iran is very good in playing this kind of chess game."

The IAEA wants Iran to address issues raised by an agency report last year that revealed intelligence pointing to past and possibly ongoing activity in Iran of use in developing the means and technologies needed to build atom arms.

Iran says the intelligence is fabricated, but the U.N. agency says its inspectors need access to sites, documents and officials to reach credible conclusions in its inquiry.

The IAEA's priority is Parchin, where its report found that Iran had built a large containment vessel over a decade ago to conduct high-explosives tests that the U.N. agency said were "strong indicators of possible" nuclear weapon development.

Western diplomats say they suspect Iran is cleaning the site to remove incriminating evidence, a charge Tehran dismisses.

Karim Sadjadpour of the Carnegie Endowment think-tank said Iran had felt no incentive to be transparent with the IAEA about past illicit or weapons-related activities out of fear that doing so would only further incriminate Tehran.

"For an agreement to be reached I think Iran would have to be offered, and would have to accept, a nuclear plea-bargain," Sadjadpour said.

Family Home and Life: Another New Look

So, I was fiddling around with my template late the other night when my 10 yr old computer decided to have some fun with me. It turned everything to symbols and squiggly lines, blinked off and on then opened a?dozen windows before freezing.....for an hour! I was going crazy! Thought I lost my entire blog! The crazy thing is, once it settled down and I was able to close out the extra windows, my blog settled into the new look I had been playing with but not committed too. Now I can't change it back, my template doesn't even offer me the option of changing it back. The two really?great things about all this? I love the new look so I don't care if it won't change back and......my husband agreed we could look for a new computer and there was one on sale! Woohoo! Tomorrow he will hook it up for me. If you need me for Say It Saturday send an email, I can access my email through my phone in case the computer isn't up and running yet. See you tomorrow!
