Cameron tells Europe to quell the turmoil

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron urged Europe's rulers on Thursday to do more to quell the euro zone debt crisis and raised the prospect of a Greek default to argue he must stick to his unpopular attempt to cut spending and reduce debt at home.

Warning that the survival of the euro was now in question, Cameron showed growing alarm and frustration that the crisis was spinning out of control, threatening Britain's $2.5 trillion (1.58 trillion pounds) economy and his own electoral prospects in 2015.

"Greece is on the brink, the survival of the euro in question," Cameron told business leaders on a grey and damp morning in the northern English city of Manchester.

"Faced with this, I have a clear task: to keep Britain safe. Not to take the easy course - but the right course," he added.

Echoing the words of Bank of England Governor Mervyn King, Cameron said the crisis in the European Union - Britain's biggest trading partner - had lasted more than two years but the "storm" was far from over.

"We are in uncharted territory which carries huge risks for everybody. As I have consistently said, it is in Britain's interest for the euro zone to sort out its problems."

He said Europe's problems showed the dangers of scrapping his government's attempt to cut Britain's vast budget deficit, though he called on the European Central Bank to stimulate demand to help peripheral euro members.

"It is becoming increasingly clear that they are less likely to be able to sustain that necessary adjustment economically or politically unless the core of the euro zone, including through the ECB, does more to support demand and share the burden of adjustment," Cameron said.

He added that the Bank could do more to support the economy if inflation fell below its target, a barbed way of asking Governor King to help boost demand.

After snubbing Francois Hollande when the Socialist candidate came to London weeks before the French election, the Conservative Cameron said he now welcomed the new French president's idea of launching project bonds to drive demand by funding big infrastructure deals.

But since Cameron refused to sign up to an EU economic pact last year that was supposed to help shore up the euro zone, his comments may have more resonance in euro sceptic Britain and his own divided party than in the EU's 26 other member states.

STORM TIME?

For Cameron, the gale winds from Europe threaten to undermine the central purpose of the coalition government he has headed since 2010: to nurture Britain back to growth after the most serious crisis since the Great Depression.

Turmoil in Europe could deepen Britain's recession by crippling the European banking system and dampening already battered demand.

"People are holding back from investment decisions because of that uncertainty - it's the worst enemy for business, uncertainty is the big killer," said Les Harvey, a business consultant who specialises in construction and infrastructure and who attended Cameron's speech.

"It's a concern. It's such a major trading partner - whatever affects them is going to affect us."

Cameron said the storm showed Britain must continue to cut the deficit, which in 2009-2010 reached a record 11 percent of gross domestic product, rather than throwing money into the economy in an attempt to kick-start growth.

"We must resist dangerous voices calling on us to retreat," Cameron said. "If markets don't believe you are serious about dealing with your debts, your interest rates rocket and your economy shrinks."

But even the government's own figures show Britain's public sector net debt will rise over the next four years, hitting a record of 1.48 trillion pounds in 2016, while the deficit cannot shrink as fast as expected if the economy continues to contract.

Opponents said the government had failed to stoke growth.

"The fact is we are paying a long-term price for these failures," the Labour Party's shadow chancellor, Ed Balls, told parliament.

"National debt higher, living standards down, long-term youth unemployment becoming entrenched, over 24,000 companies out of business...investment plans cancelled or diverted overseas, our economy weaker, capacity lost," Balls said.

That economic minefield makes Cameron's position even more precarious as he faces an electorate upset at the gloom of recession and an unruly anti-European Union wing of his Conservative party that wants Britain to leave the club.

China abuzz over reported N.Korea boat hijackings

David Gray / Reuters

A paramilitary policeman holds up his hand as he stands guard outside the main entrance to the North Korean embassy in central Beijing on Thursday. North Koreans holding three Chinese fishing boats and 29 sailors have demanded payment before they will release them, Chinese media reported on Thursday.

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

BEIJING ? In what appears to be a rare public spat between longtime neighbors and allies, 29 Chinese sailors have been kidnapped in the Yellow Sea by North Koreans, according to Chinese media reports.

Three Chinese fishing ships were operating in waters between North Korea and China on May 8 when they were boarded, 29 crew members taken hostage and the vessels hijacked, the reports said late Wednesday.?

The vessels reportedly were then taken to North Korean waters where they have remained since. One fisherman was said to have escaped. ?

One of the ships? owners, Sun Caihui, said that the hijackers? ship was a North Korean naval vessel and that some of the men were wearing uniforms of the Korean People?s Navy, according to a report on Netease, a popular Chinese web portal. ?

?

How Sun was able to determine whether the hijackers? ship was a North Korean military vessel, much less whether the kidnappers were working on behalf of the North Korean government or were pirates working independently, remains unclear.??

Immediately after the incident, the hijackers allegedly asked one of the Chinese captains to call Sun to tell him that the hijackers were demanding 1.2 million yuan ($190,000) in ransom for the three ships captured. Sun said he has not been in contact with his crew since that call, but new reports late Thursday suggested that the kidnappers are now seeking around 900,000 yuan ($140,000) for their release.

North Korea?s government has not made any public comment on the case. Likewise, China?s government would not publicly confirm any details about the reported incident.?

China is North Korea?s key international ally, with Beijing having been Pyongyang?s main supplier of food aid and oil despite strict international sanctions over the reclusive country?s nuclear ambitions and rocket launches.?

"China is maintaining close contact with North Korea through the relevant channels and we hope this problem will be appropriately solved as soon as possible," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a daily briefing.?

"We have also stated to North Korea that it should ensure the legitimate rights of Chinese ship personnel."

The owner of another ship involved, named Zhang Dechang, said that during a talk with his ship?s captain on May 9, he was assured?that no direct threats had been made against the sailors themselves. However, in an article Thursday in the Chinese newspaper Global Times Zhang said he had received a call from the hijackers on Tuesday threatening to ?dispose? of the ships and the fishermen if the ransom was not paid by May 17.

Conditions on the boats are said to be cramped and the fishermen reportedly have not been well looked after. Both Zhang and Sun said their ship captains have told him that they don?t have much to eat and that they?ve had little rest.

Sun said the incident has brought feelings of anger and helplessness. ?Relatives of the sailors ? parents, children, wives ? came to us for their men, weeping,? he said, ?We could do nothing.???

Anger among Chinese?
The incident has raised the ire of China?s netizens, who have wondered why it has taken so long for news of the alleged hijacking to be released and why Beijing has reacted so gently on this matter.?

On China?s Twitter-like service, Weibo, the issue was the top trending topic Thursday. ?Has North Korea forgotten how China aided North Korea in the Korean War?? wrote one user. ?Why are our fishermen always being arrested by foreigners, our waters always occupied by other countries? Don?t bully us, OK???

Others Weibo users were more belligerent. ?If they dare to execute hostages, we should immediately destroy them!? declared another.?

In general, there appears to be a growing public frustration in China over the government?s seeming desire to not react to the incidents aggressively, perhaps best summed up by one Weibo user who wrote: ?I wish the Chinese government could be stronger and stop chanting slogans like ?harmony? and ?peace.???

Documents shed new light on Trayvon Martin killing

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Trayvon Martin's autopsy shows he had marijuana in his system the night he was killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, and a gunshot to his chest came from close range, according to nearly 200 pages of previously undisclosed documents released Thursday.

At least one investigator wanted to charge Zimmerman with manslaughter but was overruled, according to the documents, which are shedding new light on a case that has raised questions about racial profiling and "stand your ground" laws. The investigator, who was on the scene after the shooting, wrote on March 13 that the confrontation should have been avoided. That report came nearly a month before Zimmerman was arrested.

The documents, photos and video were turned over by prosecutors to defense attorneys earlier this week before they were released to the media. Included in the many witness interviews were accounts by an acquaintance of Zimmerman's who said he's racist and a co-worker who said Zimmerman bullied him and mocked him with an exaggerated Middle Eastern accent.

The autopsy says medical examiners found THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, when they tested Martin's blood and urine. A police report shows the 17-year-old had been shot once in the chest and had been pronounced dead at the scene. The autopsy says the fatal shot was fired from no more than 18 inches away.

Also in the package is a photo showing Zimmerman with a bloody nose on the night of the fight. A paramedic report says Zimmerman had a 1-inch laceration on his head and forehead abrasion.

"Bleeding tenderness to his nose, and a small laceration to the back of his head. All injuries have minor bleeding," paramedic Michael Brandy wrote about Zimmerman's injuries in the report.

Whether Zimmerman was injured in the Feb. 26 altercation with Martin has been a key question. The 28-year-old Zimmerman has claimed self-defense and said he only fired because the unarmed teenager attacked him.

Zimmerman was not arrested for weeks because he invoked the Florida's law that does not require a person to retreat in the face of a serious threat. He was released on bail and is in hiding while he awaits trial on a second-degree murder charge. He has pleaded not guilty.

The investigator who called for Zimmerman's arrest, Christopher Serino, told prosecutors in March that the fight could have been avoided if Zimmerman had remained in his vehicle and awaited the arrival of law enforcement. He said Zimmerman, after leaving his vehicle, could have identified himself to Martin as a concerned citizen and talked to him instead of confronting him.

He said there is no evidence Martin was involved in any criminal activity.

The lawyer for Martin's parents seized on the investigator's recommendation.

"The police concluded that none of this would have happened if George Zimmerman hadn't gotten out of his car," said attorney Ben Crump. "If George Zimmerman hadn't gotten out of his car, they say it was completely avoidable. That is the headline."

A separate report written by Serino at the crime scene says Martin had $40.15, Skittles candy, a red lighter, headphones and a photo pin in his pocket. A single 9mm shell casing was found near Martin's body.

New witness accounts also emerged Thursday. A witness, whose name is redacted, told investigators he saw "a black male, wearing a dark colored hoodie," on top of a white or Hispanic male who was yelling for help.

The witness, who was looking out the sliding glass door at his home about 30 feet away, said he saw the black male throwing punches "MMA (mixed martial arts) style."

He said he told the fighters he was calling the police. He said that as he was making the call, he heard a shot. He looked outside and saw the person who had been on top laid out on the grass as if he had been shot. He said the other fighter was standing on the sidewalk, talking to another person with a flashlight.

The case has become a national racial flashpoint because the Martin family and supporters contend Zimmerman singled Martin out because he was black.

Two acquaintances paint an unflattering picture of Zimmerman in police interviews.

A distraught woman tells an investigator that she stays away from Zimmerman because he's racist and because of things he's done to her in the past, but she didn't elaborate on what happened between them.

"I don't at all know who this kid was or anything else. But I know George, and I know that he does not like black people. He would start something. He's very confrontational. It's in his blood. We'll just say that," the unidentified woman says in an audio recording.

A man whose name was deleted from the audio told investigators that he worked with Zimmerman in 2008 for a few months. It wasn't clear which company it was.

The man, who described his heritage as "Middle Eastern," said that when he first started many employees didn't like him. Zimmerman seized on this, the employee said, and bullied him.

Zimmerman wanted to "get in" with the clique at work so he exaggerated a Middle Eastern accent when talking about the employee, the man said. The employee told investigators that Zimmerman made reference to terrorists and bombings when talking about him.

"It was so immature," said the employee, who ended up writing a letter to management about Zimmerman.

ABC orders 10 new series for upcoming season

NEW YORK (AP) ? ABC is casting for an all-star edition of "Dancing With the Stars" this fall and is seeking to turn its Sunday night schedule into "a battle between good and evil," the network's entertainment chief said Tuesday.

The third-place broadcast network ordered 10 new series for next season, six of them dramas. In keeping with the staggered premiere schedule currently in vogue, only four of the new shows will start in September.

The network is looking to bring back favorites from the 14 editions of "Dancing With the Stars," its most popular show. Paul Lee, president of the ABC Entertainment Group, offered no hints on who would be dancing again.

In addition to the new shows, ABC is renewing six freshman series from the current season. "Missing" and "The River" are among the newly canceled. The network trails CBS and Fox in the ratings, its numbers essentially flat from last season.

"You have to evolve your brand," Lee said. "If you don't, it stagnates."

ABC's most important rebuilding job next season will come on Sunday, the most popular night for TV viewing. "Desperate Housewives" just had its series finale, and the soapy show designed to replace it, "GCBs," failed and was canceled.

Fortunately for ABC, the fantasy tale "Once Upon a Time" was an unexpected success this season and it will be paired with "Revenge," which will move from Wednesday nights. A new drama that will wrap up the night, "666 Park Avenue," is about a New York building with supernatural forces and features Vanessa Williams, late of the "Desperate Housewives" cast.

Two comedies that were introduced in the time slot following "Modern Family" on Wednesday nights ? "Happy Endings" and "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23" ? will air on Tuesdays in the fall. When "Dancing With the Stars" ends, ABC will add two new sitcoms on that night in January for a total of four.

The only new comedy to begin in September will be "The Neighbors," in that familiar seeding spot behind "Modern Family." It's about a family that moves into a New Jersey gated community where the neighbors are aliens from Zabvron, "where the men bear children and everyone cries green goo from their ears," ABC said.

"We know we wanted a family comedy," Lee said, "and we wanted to give it a real twist."

The country music drama "Nashville" begins on Wednesday in the fall, starring Connie Britton as a veteran singer whose career is on the wane. ABC is putting the new action piece "Last Resort" on Thursdays. It features Andre Braugher as the captain of a doomed military submarine.

Starting in November, ABC will attempt to establish two family comedies on Friday nights. One is Tim Allen's "Last Man Standing," back for its sophomore season, and the other is "Malibu Country," starring Reba McEntire as a mother who divorces a country music star and moves to California.

ABC will sprinkle other series premieres through the rest of the season, a model successfully followed by cable networks. They include "Mistresses," with Alyssa Milano as one of four women friends; the crime series "Red Widow"; and "Zero Hour," which brings Anthony Edwards of "ER" back to TV in a paranormal mystery.

Seattle skier falls 160 feet into Canadian crevasse, rescued unscathed ( video)

Nicolai Popov was back country skiing when he feel into a deep crevasses near Whistler, B.C. He survived the fall with no injuries.

By David Clark Scott / May 14, 2012

Nikolai Popov: his fall and his rescue from a crevasse on Decker Mountain in Canada.

Nikolai Popov was back country skiing, alone, this past Friday on Decker Mountain, about five miles from Whistler, British Columbia.

He knew the risks, and knew enough to watch for crevasses.

"I saw that there was a little crack and started probing with a pole to see where the crevasse is," Popov told CTV News. "Just as I was doing that, the whole thing collapsed under me and I found myself in a very nasty hole, it was quite deep."

In fact, it was about 50 meters (164 feet) deep.

Popov wasn't hurt in the fall. But he sat there in the deep crevasse waiting for two hours before rescuers arrived. It might have been longer if another skier hadn't noticed that Popov was suddenly no longer behind him.

Neither Popov nor the other skier had a cell phone. The good Samaritan skied to where he could alert a search and rescue team. A helicopter brought in a rescue team and Popov was pulled out of the crevasse.

Popov's incident is a cautionary tale: Don't ski alone and bring a rope in this kind of terrain, under these conditions.

"I wouldn't recommend touring alone," said Daren Romano with Whistler Search and Rescue. "Be prepared for self-rescue if you're going with a party. Take some ropes with you."
