Sprint website hints at Samsung Galaxy Note for the Now Network

Image
Well, color us tickled, but upon our recent visit to Sprint's website, we found a curious, unbranded device that looks awfully similar to Samsung's Galaxy Note. Might this fantastic phablet be the next big thing to hit the Now Network, or is it merely the whim of a careless graphic designer? Only time will tell, but with Sprint's recent push for LTE handsets, it seems unlikely that -- if this phone were to arrive -- it'd feature Samsung's mighty Exynos processor that we love so dearly.

Insert Coin: The PowerPot portable electric generator (video)

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.
Image
Assuming you're not getting through the day with a bounty of fuel cell-powered gadgets, you've probably been in a situation where you needed power and it was nowhere to be found. The PowerPot isn't the most practical solution for every scenario, but it's likely to come in handy at least once. The power-generating pot uses thermoelectric modules to convert temperature differences into a 5-, 10- or 15-watt regulated power stream, sufficient for juicing up USB devices like smartphones, GPS devices and LED lamps. The most traditional method for creating this temperature difference is to put a pot of cold water over an open flame, but the device is adaptable to other configurations -- a pot of snow on a thermal spring, for example. Assuming you've taken the fire approach, you can also use the pot to boil water or cook food as you charge your gadgets.

The inventor has created a functional prototype that features fire-proof components and looks quite polished, but now the team is turning to Kickstarter to advance the project to production. Your pledge could net you any of a variety of PowerPots, ranging from a 5-watt portable V flavor for $125 to the 15-watt XV for $500. You can also pre-order a 10-watt PowerPot X for $199. If you're feeling generous, there's also an option to donate a PowerPot to folks in developing nations who may not have the cash to spare, but are in need of a cost-effective solution for power generation. Jump past the break to see the PowerPot V in action, and hit up the source link to scroll through the available configs before making your pledge.

Honors bestowed upon Merced College sports publicist

Sports information directors at the junior college level are a rare thing.

Most schools believe money is better spent elsewhere, but the Merced College athletic department would beg to differ.

Pat Kelly is the reason for that.

For the past 25 years, Kelly has worked tirelessly behind the scenes, greasing the wheels to help keep an athletic program with limited funds and recruiting pools competitive.

Doing the work of a complete sports information staff, Kelly maintains the school's athletic web pages, creates game and season programs for MC's 12 athletic teams, and facilitates most of the school's home contests.

Kelly also gives his time to help facilitate a number of the community college state tournaments.

He does all that while committing a couple of hours three days a week to The Independence Resource -- a nonprofit organization that helps the disabled learn basic life skills.

Kelly's quarter century of dedication was honored by his peers last Thursday as he received the Brass Top Award for excellence in his profession during the "Honoring Our Own" luncheon at the California Community College Athletic Association's 15th annual convention.

"My initial reaction was, 'Are you kidding me?' " Kelly said. "The bulk of California's SIDs are down South and they do some really good work, so I never even considered winning an option.

"It's a very humbling experience to be thought of by your peers like that."

While Kelly was taken by surprise, those who work regularly with him on the MC campus said the recognition has been a long time coming.

"It's not true to say we take him for granted, but you come to expect what he contributes," MC athletic director Steve Cassady said. "Having an SID is one of those areas where we've always felt like we have a leg up on the competition.

"It'd be difficult to imagine what we'd do without Pat."

The Blue Devils coaches echoed those sentiments.

From keeping statistics to the fluid operation of home games to the quality of the media guides he puts together, Kelly's hard work lets the coaches worry less about day-to-day details and more about Xs and Os.

"I've worked in a sports information department, so I know firsthand how thankless a job it is," football head coach Bob Casey said. "He does things so well that when we go on the road, opposing coaches that don't have SIDs ask me to bring Pat along to help, because they know what a professional job he does."

Women's basketball coach Allen Huddleston praises Kelly's help with the recruiting process.

"To be able to hand a kid a great looking media guide that shows what the program is about gives us a huge advantage," Huddleston said. "The way he takes pictures, updates the website and puts in the stats for us can sometimes get overlooked, but it just makes my life much easier."

Kelly said the honor has just reaffirmed that he made the right choice.

"When I started out, I thought I'd be at Merced three or four years and then move on to a four-year school," Kelly said. "It's been 25 years and that obviously hasn't happened.

"I'm really happy with what I do. To me, if you really enjoy your work, it doesn't matter how much there is, it's going to be fun."

Syrians fire across 2 borders as conflict deepens

KILIS, Turkey (AP) ? The bloody conflict in Syria spilled across two tense borders Monday when gunfire from government forces killed a cameraman in Lebanon and wounded at least six people in a refugee camp in Turkey, authorities said.

The Obama administration condemned the cross-border attacks, which came as a cease-fire brokered by international envoy Kofi Annan appeared on the verge of collapse. The cease-fire was supposed to go into effect Tuesday.

"These incidents are just another indication that the Assad regime does not seem at all willing to meet the commitments that it made to Kofi Annan," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters in Washington. "Not only has the violence not abated, it has been worse in recent days," she said.

The violence bolstered fears that the uprising could spark a broader regional conflagration by sucking in neighboring countries.

Under the Annan plan, Syrian troops were meant to pull out of population centers by Tuesday morning, but President Bashar Assad's government on Sunday introduced a new, last-minute demand ? saying forces cannot withdraw without written guarantees from opposition fighters that they will lay down their arms.

Syria's main rebel group, the Free Syrian Army, rejected the government's demand for a written guarantee, but says it will abide by its promise under Annan's plan to stop fighting ? as long as the regime does too.

"We as protectors of the Syrian people announce a cease-fire against the regime's army starting on the morning of April 10 and we will stick to this promise if the regime abides by the clauses of the initiative," a member of the FSA's military council said in a YouTube video.

The Syrian opposition and Western leaders had been skeptical all along that Assad would live up to his commitment to a truce because he broke similar promises in the past and escalated attacks on opposition strongholds in the days leading up to the cease-fire deadline.

In the latest violence, Ali Shaaban, a cameraman for the Al Jadeed television station, was filming in Lebanon's northern Wadi Khaled area when a bullet pierced his chest, Lebanese security officials said. The gunfire came from the nearby Syrian village of Armouta, the officials said.

Shaaban, who was born in 1980, died on the way to the hospital, the officials said on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

His colleague, reporter Hussein Khreis, said the team heard heavy gunfire around them from all sides "falling like rain." Shaaban was inside a car when he was struck, Khreis said.

"If you see the car, you would think it was in a war zone," Khreis said on Al Jadeed TV. "It is completely destroyed from the bullets."

He said they waited for more than two hours for the Lebanese army and some residents to come and pull them out to safety.

"I ask forgiveness from Ali's family because I couldn't do anything for him," he said, breaking into tears.

Al Jadeed said that Syrian security officials dressed in civilian clothes fired more than 40 bullets at their staff, who were on Lebanese soil. Al Jadeed said on its Arabic Twitter account that the Lebanese military retrieved Shaaban's body from near the border.

The post on Twitter quoted a staff member as saying they had received threats from members of the Syrian army who were armed and dressed in civilian clothes.

Earlier in the day, Syrian forces fired across the border into a refugee camp in Turkey, wounding at least five people, authorities said. The soldiers were apparently firing at rebels who tried to escape to the refugee camp after ambushing a military checkpoint, according to the Britain-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which cited a network of sources on the ground.

Turkey's Foreign Ministry said two Syrian citizens and two Turkish officials were wounded when the camp came under fire from the Syrian side. Local authorities, however, put the number of wounded at four Syrians and two Turks. The reason for the discrepancy was not immediately clear.

"Syrian citizens who have fled the violence by the current Syrian regime are under the full protection of Turkey," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It said 21 wounded Syrians were also brought to Turkey on Monday but that two of them died soon after.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the fighting along the Turkish border began before dawn Monday when rebel fighters attacked Syrian soldiers manning a checkpoint near the Turkish border, killing six soldiers.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, a spokesman for the Observatory, said the troops then kept firing as they pursued eight wounded rebels who escaped to the camp just across the border in Turkey, sending bullets whizzing across the frontier.

According to the Observatory, the shooting wounded five people in the camp, which is next to the Oncupinar border post near the provincial center of Kilis.

The provincial governor, Yusuf Odabas, said five people were wounded: three Syrians, one Turkish translator and one Turkish policeman. The translator had entered the camp to try to help calm an anti-Assad protest, he said.

The governor said Turkish military forces did not return fire.

"Right now, the border area is quite and clashes are over," Odabas said late Monday afternoon.

Turkey shelters thousands of refugees who have fled Syria as Assad tries to crush a revolt against his regime. The U.N. estimates some 9,000 people have been killed in Syria since March 2011, when the uprising began.

Turkey hosts some 24,000 Syrian refugees, including hundreds of army defectors, and has floated the idea of setting up a buffer zone inside Syria if the flow of displaced people across its border becomes overwhelming.

The two countries share a 911-kilometer (566-mile) border, and parts of southern Turkey near Syria are informal logistics bases for rebels, who collect food and other supplies in Turkey and smuggle them to comrades across the border.

Annan is scheduled to visit at least one refugee camp in Hatay province, bordering Syria, on Tuesday afternoon, Turkey's Foreign Ministry said.

Annan has been on a diplomatic push to rally support for his cease-fire deal. The international community, which so far is unwilling to contemplate military intervention, has had little leverage over Syria.

But Iran, Russia and China have been Assad's strongest supporters. Annan already has traveled to Moscow and Beijing, and he was expected in Tehran on Tuesday.

On Monday, Russia was hosting Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem.

It is not clear whether Moscow will try to pressure Syria to comply with the cease-fire plan, though Russia said Monday it may send its observers to Syria as part of a potential U.N. monitoring mission.

Also Monday, Human Rights Watch said it has documented the killings by Syrian forces of 85 civilians, including women and children, and the summary executions of at least 16 wounded or captured opposition fighters.

The New York-based group said it only included cases corroborated by witnesses, but has received many more reports of similar incidents.

AOL to sell 800 patents to Microsoft for $1.0 bn

AOL to sell 800 patents to Microsoft for $1.0 bn

AOL to sell 800 patents to Microsoft for $1.0 bn

AOL announced plans to sell more than 800 patents to Microsoft in a $1.056 billion deal giving the struggling Internet pioneer a needed cash injection as it seeks to fend off pressure from shareholders.

The deal also provides Microsoft with licenses to more than 300 additional patents and patent applications, AOL said in a statement.

AOL chief executive Tim Armstrong said the deal "unlocks current dollar value for our shareholders and enables AOL to continue to aggressively execute on our strategy to create long-term shareholder value."

Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith said in the statement that the software giant is getting "a valuable portfolio that we have been following for years and analyzing in detail for several months."

He said Microsoft "was able to achieve our two primary goals: obtaining a durable license to the full AOL portfolio and ownership of certain patents that complement our existing portfolio."

AOL said that after the deal is complete, it will continue to hold "a significant patent portfolio of over 300 patents and patent applications spanning core and strategic technologies, including advertising, search, content generation/management, social networking, mapping, multimedia/streaming, and security among others."

AOL also received a license to the patents being sold to Microsoft.

The patent sale includes stock in an AOL subsidiary on which AOL expects to record a loss for tax purposes and as a result, AOL will offset most taxes in the deal.

The company said it intends "to return a significant portion of the sale proceeds to shareholders and will determine the most efficient and effective method to do so prior to the closing of the transaction."

Earlier this year a US hedge fund with a large stake in AOL sought five seats on the board of directors and criticized the strategy of the current management for failing to deliver for shareholders.

AOL has been losing money since the collapse of its leadership as an Internet subscription service, and has been seeking to become a more diversified Web firm.

The company fused with news and entertainment giant Time Warner in 2001 at the height of the dotcom boom in what is seen as one of the most disastrous mergers ever. It was spun off by Time Warner in December 2009 into an independent company.

Under Armstrong, hired three years ago, the company formerly known as America online has invested heavily in online content, purchasing The Huffington Post and TechCrunch websites and putting money in local news network Patch.

The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of 2012, the companies said.

Credit Karma Answers: Should I Pay Cash for My Car or Finance ...

Woman Getting New CarQuestion:

Seven years ago, thanks to my parents, I graduated from college with no debt and a healthy love of saving money and living below my means.

Over the past year, I saved for a new-to-me car and did a lot of research to get a great deal. When I went to buy, I could have paid for the car outright but decided to finance in order to build credit. I was surprised to find out that though my credit score was an excellent 778, I was going to be slapped with a high interest rate. The salesman doing the financing said banks were not interested in lending to me because a) I was a first time borrower, b) it was a used car, and c) my credit history consisted only of credit cards.

Though I negotiated it down a bit, the salesman recommended making the monthly payments for a year and a half before paying off the loan. He said that then, I would establish credit and be a more desirable borrower the next time I buy a car, or when I?m ready to buy a house.

I have a few questions. First, was the salesman being sincere about why the interest rate was so high? Second, since I could pay this off at any point, I?m wondering how long I need to make monthly payments in order to establish enough credit. Is it really a year and a half? And lastly, since my credit is already so good, is it even necessary to make myself a more desirable borrower?

Answer:

One thing?s for sure: You?ve made some great money moves so far. Good job! And you?re right, your excellent credit score ultimately serves to help access the best financial offers and save you money on interest rates. Now, to answer your questions.

Why is the interest rate so high?

First, the salesman is correct; you?re a higher credit risk because of your first-time borrower status and limited credit types. Second, it?s a loan through the dealership. These loans are historically inflated because most dealerships make more money from financing than from the mark-up on a car. (You can get loans from other sources; more on that below.) It?s also true that used car loans will come with a higher interest rate; however, it shouldn?t be more than 1-2% higher than a new car auto loan. The average interest rate for a 60-month loan on a new car is 4.58%, while a 36-month used car loan has an average rate of 5.36%, according to Bankrate?s latest numbers.

How long will it take to establish credit history with my auto loan?

If you choose financing over paying in cash, it will help build your credit rating as long as you pay responsibly and on time, but there isn?t a specific timeframe for this credit-building strategy. Keep in mind that the car salesman wants to get you to sign on the dotted line as quickly as possible. If he convinces you to choose the dealership?s financing and to make payments for a year and a half, he?ll get commission on the sale and the dealership will make money from the interest you?ll pay on their financing. In order to build your credit, it doesn?t matter what financing option you go with, dealership or through another lender, as long as you make timely payments.

How do I become a desirable borrower?

Having a diverse credit portfolio, such as having credit cards, student loans and auto loans in your name, along with making timely bill payments, is important in order for you to be seen as a desirable borrower. However, a good credit score should also save you money. Making timely payments on an auto loan will help you build your credit history, but taking on additional debt and paying a high interest rate for the sole purpose of becoming more creditworthy is counterproductive.

If you do decide to finance instead of pay in cash, here are some tips to help you in the process, and while you?re building your credit:

Shop Around

Instead of taking the dealership loan right away, spend some time researching other loan options first. With an excellent credit score of 779, you should be able to find better financing options with lower interest rates. Credit Karma shows you offers based on your credit profile. You can qualify for independent financing through a bank or a credit union before you head to the car lot.

If you plan to apply for several auto loan options, do it within a short amount of time; all of the hard inquiries from applying for several lenders should count as a single hard inquiry if they are initiated within a short timeframe, which means less damage to your credit score. Though there?s no standard for how short of a timeframe, you should be safe if you stay within a 30-day period.

Get a Cosigner

Find a trusted family member with good credit to cosign the auto loan for you. Both of your credit scores will work in tandem to get you a better rate on your new loan, which will cost you less on interest in the long run.

Find a High-Yield Savings Account

Once you buy your car, keep the cash you?ll be using for monthly payments in a high-yield online savings account for bonus interest earnings. While interest rates on savings accounts aren?t high right now, earning a little extra in interest earnings helps toward paying down your car. This is a great option for you, since you already have the cash saved up for your car.

Pay More Than Your Monthly Minimum

By doing so, you?ll speed up your loan repayment while also saving money on the interest. Plus, you?ll still get the credit-building benefits of the auto loan.

Bottom Line:

You have good credit: Put it to?work for you so it saves you money. Having a good mix of credit is helpful, but it?s more important to make smart money choices.

Some Nokia Lumia 900 handsets having trouble connecting to data networks

Some Nokia Lumia 900 handsets having trouble connecting to data networks
Nokia's latest Lumia, the 900, has been rightfully lauded for its low price and lovely polycarbonate shell, but apparently, all is not well with the new handset. According to forum posts on Nokia Support Discussions and elsewhere, some 900s aren't able to connect to any of AT&T's data networks. The affected phones get data reception initially, but once the connection is severed by turning the phone off or placing it in airplane mode, it fails to reconnect. Some have successfully solved the problem by removing the SIM, performing a master reset, shutting the phone off, reinserting the SIM and turning it back on. However, it looks like that solution isn't working for everyone. It seems the problem has appeared in a limited number of Lumias, so we've asked AT&T about the issue and are awaiting an official response on the matter while it investigates. In the meantime, let us know in the comments if your 900's data deprived, or if it's been loving LTE without interruption.
