As the costs of skin cancer treatment soar, it may be time for another ...

Is it time to resurrect Sid the Seagull and skin cancer prevention campaigns?

That?s the suggestion from?Dr Melissa Stoneham, in her latest report from the?JournalWatch?service of?The Public Health Advocacy Institute WA.

    ***

Slip Slop Slap?do we need this iconic campaign to re-emerge?

    Melissa Stoneham writes:

Remember Sid the Seagull? The life-size sun safe seagull who over thirty years first graced our television screens with his Slip, Slop, Slap message?

That advice, given back in the early 1980s was so logical, so simple, so easy to remember and it was widely followed.

    YouTube Preview Image

Since that campaign, schools, kindergartens and even workplaces have got on board with the SunSmart message. We have seen the Me No Fry and the You Can Leave Your Hat On campaigns come and go?.but in recent times it seems the SunSmart message has been diluted ? almost missing from our TV screens.

Did we listen to Sid?s message and are we as sun safe today?

Well, according to a recent journal article published in the Medical Journal of Australia, we clearly can do better! The authors, led by Marloes Fransen, from the Department of Medicine at the University of Melbourne set out to report the burden and cost of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) treatments in Australia and to project estimates of numbers and costs to 2015.

Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), which includes basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), is the most common and expensive cancer in Australia. We also know that NMSC is caused by sun exposure.

But as NMSC are not required to be reported to cancer registries in Australia, it makes it very difficult to estimates the number of treatments and costs. To overcome this data gap, the authors used Medicare data to report the annual numbers of NMSC treatments between 1997 and 2010, to calculate the costs associated with these treatments and then predict the numbers and costs for the year 2015.

What they found was that between 1997 and 2010, Medicare claims were made for 412 493 and 767 347 NMSC treatments, respectively, representing an increase of 86%. The authors calculated that by 2015, the number of NMSC treatments will be 938 991. This represents a doubling in the number of NMSC treatments between 1997 and 2015.

Those most likely to seek treatment were people aged 55 years and over, but this is no surprise as the latency period for skin cancer lasts from several years to decades.

The study also reported the total treatment cost, adjusting for health inflation, was $511.0 million in 2010 with an estimate to increase to $703.0 million in 2015. Those living in Queensland and New South Wales accounted for most of the cost associated with treatment of NMSC.

With the escalating costs to both the community and government, it is time to ask for Sid the Seagull to come back?

Knicks Top Lakers, 116-107: Carmelo Anthony Scores 30 Before Ankle Injury (VIDEO)

NEW YORK ? Carmelo Anthony scored 22 of his 30 points in the first quarter, and the New York Knicks held on after he departed with a sprained left ankle to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 116-107 on Thursday night in coach Mike D'Antoni's return to Madison Square Garden.

Firing in 3-pointers and moving the ball to open shooters, things they often struggled to do under D'Antoni, the Knicks won for the eighth time in nine games and improved to 9-0 at home for the first time since the 1992-93 season.

Meanwhile, things are starting as poorly for D'Antoni in Los Angeles as they ended in New York. The Lakers, still without Steve Nash and Pau Gasol, were never really in the game while losing their fourth straight and falling to 9-14.

Raymond Felton scored 19 points, and Tyson Chandler and J.R. Smith added 18 apiece for the Knicks.

Kobe Bryant had 31 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers. Metta World Peace finished with 23 points and Dwight Howard had 20.

The Lakers did cut what was a 26-point deficit to 113-107 when World Peace converted a three-point play with 1:27 remaining, but the Knicks took more than a minute off the clock while twice grabbing offensive rebounds on the next possession before Chandler made a free throw with 18 seconds to play.

Anthony, playing at an MVP level after he struggled last season under D'Antoni, made his first three 3-pointers, nearly reaching his NBA-leading average of 9.7 points per first quarter before 2 1/2 minutes were even gone. Bryant tried to keep pace but the Knicks couldn't be stopped, making 17 of 23 shots (74 percent) and building a 41-27 advantage.

Anthony finished two shy of the franchise record for points in a quarter, held by Willis Reed and Allan Houston. And he was easily on pace to pass Bryant's building record of 61 points, though he didn't even get halfway there after playing just 5 minutes of the second half.

When it was over, D'Antoni shook hands with Mike Woodson, who replaced him on the New York bench, and a couple of Knicks players before walking off after another rocky night with the Lakers.

He's often been considered an offensive genius whose teams are poor defensively, but right now the Lakers don't really look good on either end.

The Knicks made 22 of their first 30 shots overall and started 8 of 10 behind the arc. Even when the Lakers tried to defend, it didn't work. Howard batted the ball away from Rasheed Wallace in the post, so Wallace simply retrieved it in the corner, buried a 3-pointer, and the lead ballooned to 58-32.

It was 68-49 at the break, but the Knicks lost some of their flow when Anthony went to the locker room with 6:41 left in the third quarter and a 17-point lead. He had landed awkwardly after being fouled by Howard on a drive to the basket, and though he was able to stay in to shoot the free throws, Anthony was removed at the next whistle.

D'Antoni was loudly booed during pregame introductions, Knicks fans who appreciated the rugged defensive teams of the 1990s never truly embracing his offense-first style. D'Antoni said he enjoyed his time in New York and said earlier Thursday the Knicks, who lead the NBA in 3-pointers per game and fewest turnovers, were playing the way he'd like his team to play.

Sure enough, they made 12 3-pointers, right at their average, and turned it over just six times.

D'Antoni couldn't get the Knicks' offense going last season and tensions between he and Anthony seemed strained, though both denied it, when he resigned in March with the team threatening to fall out of the playoff race. The Knicks went 18-6 down the stretch under Woodson, who said he has kept aspects of D'Antoni's system while adding in some wrinkles of his own.

The result is a team that has shot to the top of the Eastern Conference with a 17-5 record.

NOTES: The Knicks opened a six-game homestand. They don't play on the road again until they visit the Lakers on Christmas. ... New York has won the last two meetings after dropping nine in a row. ... D'Antoni said he spent his off day in town visiting with his wife and son, who remained in New York after he took the Lakers job last month.

Triplets All In Jail: Shivers Brothers Could End Up In Same Michigan Correctional Facility

Holiday family reunions are a tradition in many American households, but for a set of Michigan triplets, this year's brotherly get-together may be taking place in a rather bleak setting: behind bars.

According to the Smoking Gun, 21-year-old triplets Deshawn, Juronn and Devon Shivers have all landed themselves in prison on felony charges, and all three may soon end up in the Saginaw Correctional Facility.

    ABC writes:

Deshawn and Juronn?were recently convicted of unarmed robbery by a jury in Saginaw County, Mich., after an incident in Buena Vista Township, Mich.

They could soon find themselves at the same correctional facility as the third triplet, Devon, who was convicted in 2011 of multiple weapons charges and home invasion. The earliest release date for Devon, according to Saginaw Police, is 2042.

As for Deshawn and Juronn, who will be sentenced next month, each faces a maximum of 15 years in prison, the Smoking Gun notes.

Saginaw Police Sgt. Terry Carpenter told ABC News that the Shivers triplets were active members of the "Sunny Side" gang. Other family members, including an older brother of the triplets who was reportedly in prison until August this year, are also involved in the gang.

?The Saginaw P.D. is elated by the recent convictions of Deshawn and Juronn Shivers and hope that they receive a stern sentence by the sentencing circuit court judge,? the police said in a statement.

This is not the first time a band of siblings has made headlines for running afoul of the law. In November, Vicki and Sarah Satterfield -- two thirds of a former Playboy triplets trio -- were arrested for their involvement in an Ohio strip club brawl.

In 2006, the Guardian reported that twin brothers Jonathan and Robert Maskell were put behind bars after they robbed and then killed their 74-year-old grandmother.

The 12 (Board)Games Of Christmas: Day One | Rock, Paper, Shotgun

By Robert Florence on December 12th, 2012 at 1:00 pm.

Ignoring the convention of Christmas?s 12 days, Rab Florence is bringing his twelve board game suggestions to you in time for them to appear in appropriate stockings. Here?s the first day:

Yes, on the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me an X-WING in a PEAR TREE. Okay, not a PEAR TREE but a BOX. A small box containing an X-WING and a couple of TIE Fighters. And some dice. And some templates. And some cards. And a lot of fucking awesome. (Sorry for the bad language, Santa!)

I?ve written about The X-Wing Miniatures Game before on RPS, and you can go take a look at it here, but this little update is to let you know that it?s STILL great, it STILL holds up and it?s probably only going to get better through 2013 as it gets expanded.

    WHAT IS IT?

It?s a Star Wars space battle skirmish game where one player plays the Rebel Alliance and the other player The Empire. You move little plastic ships around on a table, planning your moves in secrecy, and rolling dice to blow the hell out of your opponent. It?s a THRILL.

    WHO TO BUY IT FOR

A geek in your family who loves games and loves Star Wars.

Anyone who loves Star Wars but doesn?t realise they love games.

A parent with kids of 8 and up who love games. A love of Star Wars is not necessary. This game will create that love.

    WHERE TO BUY IT

Any games shop ? there?s been a Christmas restock of this game. I saw it this very day, in fact. Here?s a handy site that lets you find a local game shop.

You can also find it online, of course. But try to support your independents.

    WHAT TO BUY

The Core Set is plenty. It offers a lot of fun. If you?re SURE the person you?re buying for will love it, or you have a bit more money to spend, maybe pick up an extra X-Wing or an extra TIE for the card variance. Or buy an extra Core Set for a bigger battle, Or, you could pick up a Y-Wing and a TIE Interceptor so that you have some heavy ships moving around. Or all of the above if you are mad/rich/Santa.

    FIRST DAY DOWN!

And it?s the X-Wing Miniatures Game. What will be next? And who will it be good for? Stay tuned to RPS!

Sports Memorabilia Auction Business Continues to Grow

If you wanted to, you could receive a catalog in your mailbox about once every ten days.? Between splashy major auctions and weekly internet-based events, sports memorabilia auction companies crank out a lot of copy.? Once a small part of the hobby, bid to own has become the primary method of transacting business for many.

Those who predicted the demise of the small auction company when eBay rocketed to the forefront about 15 years ago turned out to be wrong.?

However, it's an ultra competitive game that keeps company reps constantly on the prowl for new consignments and new ways of making a splash.? Sports Collectors Daily chatted with Ryan Friedman, the owner of Auction Report, a website that chronicles the goings on of some of those companies.

With the year winding down, was 2012 a successful one or are your companies still having a tough time with the economy?

RF:? I think that 2012 was an exceptional year for the auction houses.? This year might have marked one for the records books with some of the most significant memorabilia and card collections in a long time hitting ?the market through auction houses such as:? The Dreier Collection (Legendary Auctions), Angelo Dundee, Oscar Robertson, Ozzie Smith, Dmitri Young Collections (SCP Auctions), Don Larsen and Bobby Knight Collection (Steiner Sports), The Find and Historic Rarities Auction (Memory Lane), The Black Swamp Find (Heritage Auctions), and so much more.

2012 also offered a huge assortment truly one of a kind high end memorabilia and cards auction off including:? Earliest known Ruth Jersey (SCP Auctions), a few T206 Wagner Cards (Goodwin & Co and Memory Lane Inc), Walter Davis Olympic Gold Medal (Grey Flannel Auctions), 1952 Topps Complete Graded Set (Mile High Card Co), and so much more from others.? It was a great year for the auction companies.

Was it harder to get consignments or harder to make money on those consignments?

RF:? This is a tough question to answer because all these auction companies are privately held and we don?t get to see their profit and loss statements, like we see with publicly traded companies, but, from talking with so many different auction houses throughout the year, consignments are always the hardest part of the auction business.? It?s not easy to get cards and memorabilia on a consistent basis.? What the public see?s with each auction is a great selection of items, but what most people don?t realize is that some of these collections and items have taken the auction companies months and years to get.? ?They spend huge amounts of money to promote, travel and research to get consignments.?? Plus, competition between the auction houses and the options consignors have between all of the different auction houses makes it even harder for each auction house to get quality consignments.

As far as how much money they make, it?s a guessing game.? But, common sense is that the auction houses are growing, many are hiring more employees, and they keep turning out more auctions, so I would say it?s safe to say they are making money.

What are companies spending most of their time doing?? What?s most important to those who you deal with right now?

RF:? Number 1, 2,3 and 4 is getting consignments.? If I were put a percentage on it, I would say that 50-80% of their time is dealing with consignments and or buying of items and somewhere in the frame of 20-50% spent on production/PR/advertisement/day of the auction/post auction support and implementation.

You can?t have an auction without consignments, so I would say THE priority and will always be priority, is getting consignments, but, ?at the same time, I am seeing a larger increase of time spent on PR/Branding/Advertisement.? Being able to reach potential new clients and keep informed the current clientele are extremely important to all of the auction companies.? In fact, I would say that PR/Branding is becoming even more important to landing the larger collections because these consignors like to know that there collection is going to be properly published ?and promoted to as many people as possible.

One thing we?ve seen become commonplace over the last several years is the increasingly high quality catalogs that auction houses are producing for their major events.? They must cost a fortune to produce and ship.? Clearly, they?re important but how so, and how do they decide how much money they can spend on each catalog beforAuction catalogs sports memorabiliae it becomes too expensive?

RF:? Everything is a numbers game.? Many of the companies that have been producing these large high quality print catalogs have been in business for a long time and their expertise in producing auctions and being able to analyze the numbers of what they believe there potential sales will be, allows them to factor in how much they can spend to produce the catalogs.?? The catalogs however are important not just in the presentation of what they are auctioning off, but also as a PR and marketing tool for the current auction future consignments, and getting new bidders.? The value of walking into a collector?s house who might have a million dollar collection and showing them the high quality auction catalog, you have produced becomes invaluable.?? These catalogs provide value to pieces (in the way they are presented) and differentiate the auction houses.

However, today, not all auction houses need to produce a catalog.? In fact, we are seeing more and more auctions that are completely web based (no print catalog produced).? We see these for a few reasons; first,?? the cost of producing a catalog isn?t justified by what is being auctioned. Secondly, some auction houses know that their clients just don?t need a printed catalog to lug around, they know that 98% of bids are coming in through the web sites where all of the items are pictured (with more images than the print catalogs) and full descriptions.? With today?s technology and hardware that is available (Tablets, Notebooks, Cell Phones) accessing the auction and being able to have all the information you need to bid, makes the need for a catalog less important.

sports memorabilia at Hunt Auctions boothHow do auction companies build their mailing list and is it the most important part of their business?

RF:? There are numerous ways that the auction companies build their mailing lists, most commonly through various advertisement (on-line and print), conventions, and PR/Social Media.?? I think it?s an important part of their business, and has to be managed well.? They also have to engage their existing clients all the time as well, bringing top notch customer service to existing clients (thus keeping them on your mailing list) is equally as important as bringing in new clients.

There was at least one new entry into the auction game this year and another that changed hands.? Is there still room in what?s become a very crowded field?

RF:? Obviously for Auction Report, the more auction houses the better. But, in my opinion I believe that there is plenty of room for more.?? The auction business and or the auction format of buying and selling is the most popular way to do business, period.? This being said, it is only natural to see more ?auction companies? pop up.? Or, you see companies that have been in business for years who have been simply buying and selling items directly to their clients who are switching over and now offering items in an auction format.? ?A lot of the auction houses have a niche of what they deal in and there are plenty of areas of collectible and material to support more auction companies.

There is also the eBay cross over companies, and what I mean by this is that these are companies that have primarily sold through eBay style auctions who now find it better to do their own auctions with their own auction software in house.? ?Also, there are companies that do eBay only auctions, but, are now marketing and promoting their auctions outside of the eBay community, so they may seem new, but they are just reaching a new collector base outside of the eBay world.

Lastly, I do believe that you might see some of the larger auction houses merge with or buy some of the smaller auction houses in the next year or two.?? Just like you see with massive companies like AHuggins and Scott Auctions boothpple, Google, Microsoft, GE, it becomes easier to grow the business, acquire top talent and expanding your clientele base by buying up smaller companies.? We may see some of this in the near future or in a down market turn.

What?s the one thing buyers wish auction companies would change about the way they conduct business?

RF:? I wouldn?t say buyers want specific things changed, but rather, they want to see the auction houses always making improvements where they can.? Fed to spend $45B to sustain bond purchases

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Federal Reserve will spend $45 billion a month to sustain an aggressive drive to keep long-term interest rates low. And it says it plans to keep a key short-term rate near zero until unemployment drops below 6.5 percent.

The policies are intended to help an economy that the Fed says is growing only modestly with 7.7 percent unemployment in November.

Stocks and bond yields rose after the Fed's statement was released Wednesday after its final policy meeting of the year. The Dow Jones industrial average was little changed just before the Fed news crossed at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time and jumped 69 points shortly after.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.69 percent from 1.65 percent as investors sold ultrasafe investments and moved money into stocks.

"The Fed is aggressively trying to add to the economy's strength," said Jim O'Sullivan, chief economist at High Frequency Economics.

The Fed said it will direct the money into long-term Treasurys to replace an expiring bond-purchase program. The new purchases will expand its investment portfolio, which has reached nearly $3 trillion.

The central bank will continue buying $40 billion a month in mortgage bonds. All told, its monthly bond purchases will remain $85 billion. They are intended to reduce already record-low long-term rates to encourage borrowing and accelerate growth.

The Fed said it will continue the bond purchases until the job market improves substantially. It said it can pursue the aggressive stimulus programs because inflation remains below its target.

The Fed also kept its target for its benchmark short-term interest rate at a record low near zero, where it has been for the last four years. The Fed said Wednesday that it would link any future rate change to lower unemployment, as long as inflation is expected to stay below 2.5 percent.

Before Wednesday, the Fed had said it planned would keep the rate low until at least mid-2015.

The statement was approved on an 11-1 vote. Jeffrey Lacker, president of Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, objected for the eighth time this year.

The meeting was held against the backdrop of the looming "fiscal cliff," the sharp tax increases and spending cuts that will hit the economy in January if Congress and President Barack Obama are unable to reach an agreement this month to avert them.

Bernanke has said that the Fed's efforts will not be able to rescue the economy if the budget negotiations fail and the country does go over the fiscal cliff.

Fears of the cliff have led some U.S. companies to delay expanding, investing and hiring. Manufacturing has slumped. Consumers have cut back on spending. Unemployment remains elevated. If higher taxes and government spending cuts were to last for much of 2013, most experts say the economy would sink into another recession.

The latest bond-buying program would replace an expiring program called Operation Twist. With Twist, the Fed sold $45 billion a month in short-term Treasurys and used the proceeds to buy the same amount in longer-term Treasurys.

Twist didn't expand the Fed's investment portfolio, it just reshuffled the holdings. But the Fed has run out of short-term securities to sell. So to maintain its pace of long-term Treasury purchases and to keep long-term rates low, it must spend more and increase its portfolio.

The Fed's portfolio totals nearly $2.9 trillion ? more than three times its size before the 2008 financial crisis.

The Fed has launched three rounds of bond purchases since the financial crisis hit. In announcing a third program in September, the Fed said it would keep buying mortgage bonds until the job market improved substantially.

Skeptics note that rates on mortgages and many other loans are already at or near all-time lows. So any further declines in rates engineered by the Fed might offer little economic benefit.

Inside and outside the Fed, a debate has raged over whether the Fed's actions have helped support the economy over the past four years, whether they will ignite inflation later and whether they should be extended.

U.N. nuclear agency "ready" to go to Iran's Parchin site

VIENNA (Reuters) - U.N. nuclear inspectors would be ready to go to Iran's disputed Parchin military complex if the Islamic state were to allow it during talks in Tehran later this week, a senior official said on Wednesday.

The U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) believes Iran has conducted explosives tests with nuclear applications at Parchin, a sprawling facility southeast of Tehran, and has repeatedly asked for access.

Western diplomats say Iran has carried out extensive work at Parchin over the past year to cleanse it of any evidence of illicit activities, but IAEA chief Yukiya Amano said last week a visit would still be "useful".

Iran rejects accusations of a covert bid to develop the means and technologies needed to build nuclear arms and says Parchin is a conventional military site.

Thursday's talks in Tehran could indicate whether Iran is more willing to address international concerns over its atomic activities after U.S. President Barack Obama's re-election.

The stakes are high: Israel - widely believed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed power - has threatened military action if diplomacy fails to prevent its arch-enemy acquiring nuclear weapons. Iran says it would hit back hard if attacked.

IAEA Deputy Director General Herman Nackaerts, head of the team travelling to Iran, said the aim was to reach an agreement on outstanding issues "related to possible military dimensions" of Iran's nuclear program.

"We also hope that Iran will allow us to go to the site of Parchin," Nackaerts told journalists at Vienna airport before departing for Tehran.

"If Iran would grant us access, we would welcome that chance and we are ready to go," he said.

Western diplomats say they are not optimistic about a breakthrough in this week's discussions, since a series of meetings since January have failed to make any progress.

But they do not rule out that Iran, under tightening Western sanctions hurting its oil-dependent economy, will offer some concessions in an attempt to ease international pressure.

The IAEA wants Iran to allow its inspectors to visit sites, interview officials and study documents as part of an inquiry - largely stymied by Iranian stonewalling for four years - into suspected past, and possibly current, nuclear weapons research.

Iran says its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and rejects international demands to curb nuclear activity that could have both civilian and military purposes.

It says it must reach a framework agreement on the inquiry with the IAEA before providing the requested access.

Concussions affect children's brains even after symptoms subside

Dec. 11, 2012 ? Brain changes in children who have sustained a mild traumatic brain injury, or concussion, persist for months following injury -- even after the symptoms of the injury are gone, according to a study published in the December 12 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience. The findings highlight the potential benefit of using advanced imaging techniques to monitor recovery in children following concussions.

Despite growing concerns over the risk of concussions in youth, the majority of research examining their effects on the brain has involved adults. These studies suggest that, among other things, concussions alter the brain's white matter -- the long fibers that carry information from one area of the brain to another. Some recent data suggest the developing brains of children may be more vulnerable to the effects of mild traumatic brain injury.

In the current study, Andrew Mayer, PhD, and colleagues at the Mind Research Network and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico, specifically studied older children (ages 10-17) with mild traumatic brain injury. They found that structural changes in the children's white matter seen about two weeks after the injury remained evident more than three months later despite the disappearance of symptoms related to the injury.

"These findings may have important implications about when it is truly safe for a child to resume physical activities that may produce a second concussion, potentially further injuring an already vulnerable brain," Mayer said.

The researchers conducted cognitive testing and used an advanced imaging technique known as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to examine the brains of 15 children who had recently (within 21 days of injury) experienced a concussion and 15 unaffected children. In the brain, DTI specifically images white matter. During a follow-up visit approximately four months post-injury, scientists repeated cognitive testing and imaging.

Initial testing revealed that children with the mild brain injury had subtle cognitive deficits and changes in white matter compared with healthy counterparts. While the children did not report symptoms of the injury during the follow-up visit months later, DTI revealed that the structural changes to the brain remained.

"The magnitude of the white matter changes in children with mild traumatic brain injury was larger than what has been previously been reported for adult patients with mild traumatic brain injury," Mayer said. "This suggests that developmental differences in the brain or the muscular-skeletal system may render pediatric patients more susceptible to injury," he added.

Based on the imaging data collected during the study, the researchers were able to accurately distinguish the brains of patients who had mild traumatic brain injury from those who were healthy 90 percent of the time. Such findings suggest DTI, which does not require the use of ionizing radiation, could one day be used to diagnose the injury and to better characterize the recovery process in the brain.

Christopher Giza, MD, an expert on developmental brain injury from the Mattel Children's Hospital and the Brain Injury Research Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, who was not involved in the study, noted that while the number of patients in the study was small, the findings mark "an important step forward in our understanding of the effects of mild traumatic brain injury on the developing brain."

"Further work is needed to determine whether the changes in white matter present at four months represent a prolonged recovery process or permanent change in the brain," Giza added. "Determining the duration of the structural changes, and whether these changes have clinical implications, remain critical areas for future studies," he said.
