Gospel stardom a bumpy road for Le'Andria Johnson (AP)

ATLANTA ? When Le'Andria Johnson won BET's "Sundays Best" two years ago, the gospel singer wasn't quite ready to live the gospel life.

She earned a recording contract after her victory, performed on the network's "Celebration of Gospel" and was on her way to gospel stardom, but Johnson still didn't want to swear off worldly habits such as going out to the nightclub, drinking alcohol or smoking. At one point, she felt like she couldn't live up to the standards expected for an inspirational singer.

"I didn't want to be disrespectful to God," Johnson said. "I wanted to cool out for the moment and do me, go out or do anything. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't do it. Going out to the club ? I couldn't. Drinking ? I just couldn't do it."

She found that the party lifestyle wasn't for her anymore, but she didn't give up everything from the secular world. She learned how to enjoy herself at functions with others who might be drinking alcohol, and still be true to her faith at the same time: "It's hard trying to please people, but not anymore."

So far, her approach has worked.

Johnson's debut album, "The Awakening of Le'Andria Johnson," which was released in mid-September, has topped Billboard's top Gospel Album chart for the fourth time in the last five weeks. She co-wrote most of the songs on her album, which also debuted at No. 1 on the Top Christian/Gospel album chart.

"When you see that mic in my hand, I'm giving you what happened to me last week or last month," Johnson said. "Good or bad, I'm giving you my story. My music is my reality show."

Most of Johnson's "reality show" has been a rough ride. The 29-year-old single mother of three has been divorced twice and struggled to financially stay afloat. She fell so behind on home payments that she lost her house to foreclosure a few days before the final "Sunday Best" audition.

Initially, Johnson did not want to make the 10-hour drive from her residence in Orlando, Fla., to New Orleans for auditions, but her family and friends persuaded her to compete. She made the drive and showed up just before her audition, wearing flip-flops and gym socks.

Johnson remembered the stares from some of the contestants, and hearing others criticize her appearance. But her vocal ability overshadowed her clothing at an audition where mostly everyone else wore semi-formal attire.

"The whole time, some were like `Oh, what does she have on? Or why does she dress like that?" she recalled. "I got those looks. I dealt with all that. I almost left. But it was a little voice in me to that told me to stand (still). From there, I've watched God change my life one episode at a time."

Once Johnson advanced to "Sundays Best," she inspired judges and many of the two million-plus viewers of the gospel talent show with her vibrant stage presence and powerful vocals.

Matthew Knowles, who signed Johnson to his label Music World Gospel in a joint venture with BET and the "Sunday Best" brand, said Johnson's soulful voice and honest lyrics remind him of Mary J. Blige.

"That's why fans are buying her music, because of her honesty," said Knowles, the father and former longtime manager of Beyonce. "I call her the Mary J. Blige of gospel music. She's just a real person. She's extremely raw sometimes."

Johnson says the experience over the past two years has given her confidence moving forward. In late November, she will release her first holiday album, "Christmas Best," which will include "Sundays Best" season four winner Amber Bullock.

"There's life in a dead situation," she said. "God can use whomever he wants to use. When I don't give myself too much credit, I know God is taking care of the situation. It's not me. I'm just glad to be a willing vessel."

Former HP CEO seeks to keep damaging letter secret (AP)

DOVER, Del. ? The Delaware Supreme Court is weighing whether to maintain the secrecy surrounding a letter from an actress' lawyer that led to the ouster of former Hewlett-Packard Co. CEO Mark Hurd following allegations of sexual harassment.

The letter was sent to Hurd last year by celebrity attorney Gloria Allred on behalf of Jodie Fisher, an actress who was hired to help with HP networking events and subsequently accused Hurd of sexual harassment.

Fisher reached a private settlement with Hurd in August 2010 for an undisclosed amount. HP announced the next day that Hurd was resigning. Instead of being fired, Hurd walked away with a severance package worth tens of millions of dollars.

A Delaware Court of Chancery judge ruled in March that the letter, which was attached to a complaint filed by an HP shareholder seeking company records regarding Hurd's departure, should be unsealed.

Hurd attorney Rolin Bissell argued Wednesday that Hurd and Fisher expected the letter to be kept confidential. He suggested that disclosure of the letter would violate their rights under California laws regarding personal privacy and the confidentiality of mediation in legal disputes. Bissell also argued that neither Delaware's law regarding shareholder access to corporate books and records, nor the presumption of openness of court records, require unsealing the letter.

"We think the public interest here is very weak," Bissell said. "We don't think that `public company' means it's a public document."

But Felipe Arroyo, an attorney for HP shareholder Ernesto Espinoza, argued that Hurd has no basis for trying to keep the letter secret.

HP gave the letter to Espinoza in response to his request for records regarding Hurd's departure. Espinoza subsequently included the letter in a complaint he filed seeking access to a report prepared for HP's board in response to the allegations against Hurd.

Arroyo noted that the letter was addressed to Hurd as CEO of Hewlett-Packard, was sent to HP's headquarters and alleged claims against both Hurd and the company. Despite his claims of confidentiality, Hurd turned over the letter to Hewlett-Packard's general counsel upon receiving it, Arroyo added.

"It was by its very nature a business communication that he had to turn over," Arroyo said.

Hewlett-Packard attorney Steven Schatz told the justices that the company took no position on whether the letter should be unsealed, but that HP never considered it to be a private, personal communication, as Hurd maintains.

In ordering the letter to be unsealed, Vice Chancellor Donald Parsons wrote that its disclosure "would be valuable to a society concerned with corporate governance and integrity."

"Apart from a few largely irrelevant details about Hurd's family life, the letter describes his alleged misuse of corporate funds to wine and dine Fisher, leaking of potentially material nonpublic information about HP to her, and other matters relating to Hurd's high corporate office and possible breaches of fiduciary duties to HP and its stockholders," Parsons wrote.

"The letter provides insight about a corporate executive who left his post amid allegations of corporate impropriety and, despite such allegations, reportedly received what some might call a `golden bungee' from the corporation," Parsons added. "These sorts of exit payments, especially those paid amid suggestions of corporate misconduct or scandal, are of particular interest to the public."

While HP determined that Hurd did not violate the company's sexual harassment policies in his relationship with Fisher, it did find that Hurd violated the company's standards of business conduct. The board cited, among other things, inaccurate expense accounts that concealed Hurd's relationship with Fisher, and compensation and expense reimbursements received by Fisher for no legitimate business purpose.

Hurd has said he didn't prepare his own expenses and that Fisher's name was not intentionally left off any reports.

The Supreme Court also heard arguments on Espinoza's appeal of Parsons' ruling denying him access to the report prepared by outside counsel for HP's board in response to the Allred letter.

Arroyo argued that the report could shed light on the board's deliberations regarding Hurd's departure and whether the board wasted company resources by giving him a severance package instead of firing him for cause.

Schatz, the HP attorney, said the company already has provided sufficient explanations for Hurd's departure, and that the report Espinoza is seeking does not address why the board decided not to fire him.

Harrisburg, Penn., to file for bankruptcy protection

By Patrick Rizzo

The potent brew of a weak recovery, falling revenues and high debt has claimed another municipal victim.

This time, it's Harrisburg, Pa.,?the state capital with a population of 46,000,?whose city council?voted late Tuesday to file for Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy protection, according to The Patriot News.

?This really is our only option out there,? Councilman Brad Koplinski told the newspaper. ?I believe this is the only thing that will work.?

Chapter 9, which was enacted just after?the Great Depression,?is designed to give municipalities some breathing room to negotiate with creditors and resolve outstanding debt issues. It's relatively rare. Only about 600 municipalities have filed for Chapter 9 since the law was enacted in 1937.

The City of Harrisburg was facing a state takeover amid its financial problems. Reuters reported?that it?"faces a $300 million debt crisis tied to a project to revamp its incinerator and has been plagued with cash flow problems."

Harrisburg joins Central Falls, R.I., in Chapter 9. The tiny New England town, facing a huge shortfall to pay for pensions and retiree benfits, filed?for protection from creditors in August.
